Weeds is an amazing, and highly addicting comedy-drama, about a suburban widowed mother raising money for her family by selling marijuana, but getting caught up in the corruption of the drug business. Although mainly a comedy, the show features sexually and emotionally disturbing material best suited to older viewers.
In many episodes we see semi-explicit sex scenes with thrusting/moaning and bare butts, but no frontal nudity. On occasion we see explicit sex scenes that feature bare breasts, and/or BDSM-related material (whipping, choking, spanking). On occasion we also see nudity in a non-sexual context, ranging from moderate to explicit and featuring bare breasts, non-detailed views of male and female genitalia, and bare butts. Most episodes feature moderate to strong sexual jokes and references as well.
The entire show is about dealing marijuana, and features extensive and frequent use of marijuana. The show also features non-frequent heavy drug material such as sight of heroin, a character acting high from ecstasy, non-detailed view of cocaine use, implied use of pills (mostly Xanax), and references to heavy drug use. One character has an addiction to alcohol and is almost constantly drinking, and many other characters drink alcohol (including children and teenagers on occasion). Many characters smoke cigarettes and cigars as well.
Language is very strong, featuring "f*ck" and "sh*t" very frequently. Milder PG-rated language, and other words like "b*tch" and "g*ddamn" are also used frequently. Very offensive words such as "c*nt" and slurs such as "f*ggot" and "n*gger" are used many times throughout the series, though not frequently.
Violence is occasionally strong, but fairly infrequent, and very tame compared to most cable shows. A minor character is impaled with a drone and we see a blood splatter, as well as his corpse. A character has his toes bitten off by a dog. It is implied another character is skinned alive, and we see some bloody detail, but we don't see an explicit or graphic view of his body. Throughout the series other characters are shot and injured or killed with some bloody detail, but not much gore. A character is bludgeoned to death. Characters are occasionally punched or beaten, with some mild/moderate blood.
Characters make questionable decisions, and although they are good-hearted people, they cannot be seen as positive role models. There are some positive messages about importance of family, but they are masked and ultimately overpowered by the negative messages about drugs and morality.
The series is rated TV-MA due to it's strong language, nudity, and mature/drug-related material. The less sexually explicit episodes might be OK for a mature 15 year old, but the more sexually explicit episodes are best suited to adults. In general, older teens (16+) can handle the content in Weeds, but should proceed with either caution, or with parental supervision.
