What's the Story?

WOULD I LIE TO YOU? is the latest in a long line of game shows imported from England and retooled for an American audience. Two teams compete to figure out who among them is telling the truth and who is lying. Each team consists of a captain -- Sabrina Jalees and Matt Walsh are regulars -- and two celebrity guests. During each round, the teams earn a point for correctly guessing whether a statement is true or not, but if they guess incorrectly, the opposing team gains a point. The gameplay is based on panelists making statements or telling stories about themselves, while the opposing team seeks to confirm the veracity of the story by asking for more details. Actor Aasif Mandi serves as host.

The British version of this game show is a long-running fave thanks to its conversational tone and the quick-witted chemistry of its panelists -- sadly, the U.S. version lacks the same charm. Riddled with ad breaks and shortened in length, the rapport simply never gets a chance to take off, much less reach the rapturously silly heights of its predecessor. It could just be a matter of giving the show and its panelists a chance to find their footing, but as things stand now, Would I Lie To You? begs another question: Why bother?
