A Lot or a Little?
What you will—and won't—find in this website.
Kids can learn that reading doesn't have to be a lonely endeavor; this site gives them the opportunity to talk about books, which is a big part of the fun. When kids add a book to their BiblioNasium libraries, they immediately get to make choices: Did they like it? Why did they like it? Why do they want to share it with a friend? They'll learn communication skills, improve their writing skills, and -- let's not forget the main thing -- actually read books! BiblioNasium is a warm, colorful community where kids can challenge themselves and have a great time doing it.
Site makes reading a fun thing to share with friends, which is obviously a good thing. Kids can get competitive or just enjoy the process of logging what they've read, which will give them a feeling of accomplishment.
Parents Need to Know
Parents need to know that BiblioNasium is a social-networking website that lets young readers log and share their favorite books. It's COPPA-compliant (COPPA is the Child Online Privacy Protection Act), which means your kid is going to be as safe as possible while she or he talks about books with other kids and teachers. The site is simple to use and supportive, and the reading challenges will give kids more confidence in their reading skills.
Is It Any Good?
It's simple, warm, and welcoming, with lots of highlights that kids will appreciate (like goofy GIF avatars!) as well as safety measures that will reassure parents wary of social networking. The reading challenges create a sense of healthy competition, whether kids are competing against themselves or a friend. Overall, the site instills the sense that reading for pleasure is a great, fun activity.
Did we miss something on diversity?
Research shows a connection between kids' healthy self-esteem and positive portrayals in media. That's why we've added a new "Diverse Representations" section to our reviews that will be rolling out on an ongoing basis. You can help us help kids by suggesting a diversity update.
