Parents Need to Know

Parents need to know that this section of the FBI Web site teaches kids and teens about how the FBI works and offers helpful lessons on being safe both on and offline. The site is educational and completely safe. Although the tone and graphics are appropriate for each age group (there are sections for grades K-5 and 6-12), the site is text-heavy and the reading level skews a bit high in places. The site links to the FBI's home page.

What's it about?

From rescue dogs to DNA, FBI KIDS gives kids and teens a behind-the-scenes look at the science, history, and mysteries that have inspired so many crime shows. For kids, the FBI's page covers working dogs, safety tips, and the general ins and outs of the FBI, and includes lots of puzzles and games designed to reinforce the lessons learned. For teens, there's in-depth historical info and an inside look at the science and investigative procedures used by the FBI's crime-solving teams.

Is it any good?

Kids and teens who've come to expect highly sophisticated, interactive Web sites may find this site's printable puzzles and very simple Flash games a bit dull, and the navigation could be a lot better. Still, the info provided is top-notch: Kids with an interest in science will love learning about fingerprint patterns and simple lessons on DNA, and teens can take a fascinating walk through sample cases, following how evidence is analyzed from start to finish.

Families can talk about...

  • Families can talk about the safety tips presented on this site, which are mostly geared toward younger kids. Have you ever been in a situation where you felt unsafe, either online or offline? If so, what did you do about it? Families of older kids and teens can talk about the science and procedures the FBI uses to investigate crimes. Families with older kids can talk about if shows like CSI and Law & Order accurate in how they depict investigations?
