Parents Need to Know

Parents need to know that KidzVuz is a friendly kids' site that lets registered users upload videos and make comments on other kids' videos. The videos are kids' reviews of popular TV shows, games, books, and other media. Every video and comment must be approved by a site moderator before it goes up. Most reviewers seem to be between 8 and 12 years old, but some kids review material that may be better suited to teens (such as Glee). Parents must provide an email address and activate kids' accounts before they can do anything on the site. Kids can watch the videos on YouTube, which may have content that's not age-appropriate, but this is optional.

Is it any good?

This straightforward site gives kids a fun way to sound off about movies, TV shows, games, and more. Uploading a video on KIDZVUZ is easy, but kids should be aware that once they submit a video review, it becomes the site's property -- which means that they need to be extra sure they're comfortable with what they've recorded. On the upside, kids can feel free to express themselves without worrying about rude comments, since site moderators must approve each comment and video before it's posted.

Online interaction: Kids can interact by making comments on other reviewers' videos. Because the site is moderated, there are no rude or inappropriate exchanges.

Families can talk about...

  • Families can talk about creating and posting videos online. Once a video is up, people you don't know can watch it, share it, and sometimes comment on it. How do you decide whether something is OK to post?

  • Families can also talk about choosing usernames. This site says usernames should not match kids' real names. Why is that important?

  • Talk about evaluating reviews. How do you know if you can

  • trust someone's opinion? Are you more likely to listen to someone your

  • own age or an adult? You can discuss how to disagree with someone

  • without being disrespectful.
