Parents Need to Know

Parents need to know that this site is a sister spin-off from the award-winning magazine New Moon Girls, aimed at tweens and teen girls. Content is written by girls and is mostly about girls' and women's issues, creativity, and accomplishments. Girls can post questions, contribute to moderated message boards, and read or publish stories, videos, art, and poems, all of which are screened before posting to the public. Girls decide whether they want to share their creative portfolios or keep them private. There's a New Moon store where posters, back issues of the magazine, and T-shirts are sold. Otherwise, this site is completely ad free. It's a subscription model, with a membership fees ranging from $4.99 per month to $49.99 per year.

What's it about?

NEW MOON GIRLS ONLINE is a stellar online destination for tween and teen girls. The site is focused on establishing a safe online community and a place where girls can publish their creative works. Some areas of the site are available without joining. However, a $4.99 per month membership fee (or $49.99 for online community access and bi-monthly e-magazine combo) allows girls to swap stories with other girls, post sensitive questions, post and receive feedback on creative works (such as drawings, poems, and photos), and take part in moderated discussions. Membership also gives girls access to their own room -- a place to post their \"stuff\": likes and dislikes, art, videos, stories, or poems.

Is it any good?

QUALITY

Like the award-winning magazine (with seven Parent's Choice Foundation Gold Awards), New Moon Girls Online has its priorities right. All postings and chats are either prescreened or moderated by adults. Girls will find a community of girls asking questions and posting creative work, as well as articles about influential women past and present, and positive stories posted by girls about their daily struggles. The "Beautiful Girls" section pays tribute to girls who have shown beauty from the inside out. At "Ask A Girl" or "Dear Luna," girls can post a question or just talk about what's important to them. This site provides rich opportunities for girls to mentor one another and learn more about themselves through self-expression.

Families can talk about...

  • Families can talk about whether they might like to participate in discussions or post questions on this type of website. What kinds of questions might they feel more comfortable asking on the computer versus face to face to a friend or adult? What will they do if the response to their question is unsatisfactory in some way?

  • What are the benefits of being part of an online community just for girls, especially at an age when their bodies are changing dramatically? Read Common Sense Media's Girls and Body Image Tips.

  • Ask your daughter: If you posted artwork, a photo, or some other creative art form on New Moon Girls Online, what sort of feedback would you want from other girls? What are some good ways to respond to other girls who post creative work on the site?

Safe Online Empowerment for Girls!

:) Awesome! My only concerns are language (ex. Oh my God) and periods, young sex, etc, etc,. Other than that, it's a safe, fun world that allows you to express creativity and chat with people like you!

Perfection.

I'm on the girls editorial board for this website/magazine and I love it so much. The message boards are completely moderated, but full of interesting discussions. You can get a lot of helpful advice from other girls and if you have questions about puberty, I guarantee you that they will be answered on New Moon. Perfect for tween and young teen girls.
