A lot or a little?

The parents' guide to what's in this website.

Positive Messages

The site focuses on fun videos about friendship and family memories.

Violence

The level of violence in a montage will depend on the photos, videos, and music a user uploads. Although the overall tone in the gallery is not violent, user-submitted montages include songs with violent lyrics and videos of gun use (a drive-by shooting, for example). The terms of service prohibit users from submitting unlawful, threatening, menacing, abusive, or harmful material. Each video in the gallery has a link to report abuse.

Sex

The level of sexual content in a montage will depend on the photos, videos, and music a user uploads. The user-submitted videos in the gallery include photos of couples kissing and women in skimpy outfits. A Passion Party video includes brief images of sex toys. Some songs contain sexual language. The site's terms of service prohibit users from submitting obscene, offensive, pornographic, unlawful, or vulgar material. Each video in the gallery has a link to report abuse.

Language

The language in a montage will depend on the photos, videos, and music a user uploads. Some videos in the gallery contain coarse language, including "s--t" and "f--k." One video is from "Team T-tty T-tty Bang Bang." The site's terms of service prohibit users from submitting obscene, offensive, unlawful, threatening, menacing, abusive, harmful, or vulgar material. Each video in the gallery has a link to report abuse.

Consumerism

The site encourages users to buy a premium account at $3.99 a month or $39.99 a year, which includes more creative and sharing options. There are also apps and DVDs for purchase, and some videos feature name brands or characters.

Drinking, Drugs & Smoking

The presence of drinking, drugs, or smoking in a montage will depend on the photos, videos, and music a user uploads. Some videos in the gallery contain images of alcoholic beverages, and some lyrics refer to drinking, drugs, and smoking.

What parents need to know

Parents need to know that One True Media is an entertaining site where people can create their own personalized movie montages by uploading photos, videos, and adding music. Some of the user-created montages in the online gallery contain violent or sexual content, as well as issues with language, drinking, drugs, or smoking. Free accounts include up to 30 seconds of online sharing; users must upgrade to a premium account for $3.99 a month to get unlimited downloading and additional online sharing time. Users can also purchase DVDs of their montages.

Ok

I use it and I guess it's ok.

Is it any good?

ONE TRUE MEDIA gives families an enjoyable way to savor and share special moments and memories, and it's something parents and kids can do together. The focus is on creating, but there's also an online gallery for viewing user-submitted montages. Parents concerned about the iffy content in the gallery will want to monitor younger users.

The main downside for One True Media is that your activity is very limited with a free account. But, it's very easy to use, so a premium membership may be worth it for families or teens who want to be able to create their own montages and share them but don't necessarily have the technical skills to pull it off using video editing software.

Talk to your kids about ...

  • Families can talk about photos that are acceptable to share online and about how once posted on the Internet, a photo can potentially stay in cyberspace forever.

  • As kids start developing their own interests, they may gravitate towards digital media creation -- a hobby you can feel good about nurturing.

  • Teens interested in creating videos may spend quite a bit of time on YouTube. Read our tips on uploading to YouTube.
