What parents need to know

Parents need to know that Little Baby Bum is a YouTube channel of songs and rhymes performed by animated characters for toddlers and preschoolers. Many are titles viewers will know ("Old MacDonald Had a Farm," "The Wheels on the Bus," and "The Alphabet Song," for example). Others will be new to those who watch. All of the songs and rhymes have learning potential, either by introducing basic concepts like simple number sense, letters and sounds, animals, and colors, or merely by exposing kids to rhythm and rhyming. We recommend parent co-viewing of YouTube content for kids under 13. Please note: Our reviewers watch between 1-2 hours of content to determine the general appropriateness of each YouTube channel. Some channels contain more variety within their content than others; we do our best to capture the channel's overall subject and tone to help parents make the best choices for their family.

What's the story?

The YouTube channel LITTLE BABY BUM is a collection of songs and rhymes for toddlers and preschoolers presented and animated by a cast of human and nonhuman characters. There's Twinkle the star, Mia, Jacus, Baa Baa the sheep, Daisy the cow, Pig (the pig), Incy Wincy the spider, and Baby Panda, plus other community friends who pop in now and then. The characters sing, dance, and perform the actions of the songs as they play.

Is it any good?

These 2- to 3-minute videos are colorful and engaging -- just the sort of thing that will get kids' attention. Many of Little Baby Bum's songs are classic childhood tunes like "Hickory Dickory Dock," "Six Little Ducks," and "If You're Happy and You Know It" -- welcome familiarity even if the variations give kids brief pause. Some will be new to preschoolers' repertoire (and possibly even parents'), but all are fun to hear and to watch, thanks to the bold animation and darling characters.

There's inherent educational quality to the simple act of singing and repeating rhymes for this age group, and Little Baby Bum's videos are a fun way to get your kids engaged in that process. Songs and nursery rhymes that incorporate simple concepts like number sense, cause and effect, and animal sounds take the learning even further. With videos available individually and in sets running anywhere from 45 to 75 minutes in length, this YouTube channel is a great resource for parents of little ones.

Talk to your kids about ...

  • Families can talk about which songs and rhymes kids most enjoy and why. Can you remember the words? Are there actions that correspond to the lyrics? Were the songs or rhymes in Little Baby Bum new to you?

  • Is it fun to imagine a place where animals walk, talk, and play like people do? Who are some other animal characters you like?

  • Use these songs and rhymes to reinforce pre-reading learning. Count steps as you take them, point out letters on signs, and play "I Spy" to help kids master colors.
