What parents need to know

Parents need to know that simple counting rhymes are used, but it's the impressive, complex pop-ups that attract attention. Preschoolers will want to touch and count monsters.

What's the story?

These friendly, colorful monsters have no intention of scaring children. Instead, they delight young readers and capture their attention as they pop up with the turn of each page. Kids will point to and count each T-shirt-clad monster, and will enjoy learning early mathematic skills.

 


Is it any good?

 

The highlights of the book are the illustrations and paper engineering. Ant Parker's monsters are wide-eyed and smiling, and they sport bright colors and stripes and polka dots. Each wears a white T-shirt displaying a different numeral.

"Monsters! Is this a scary book?" was one 4-year-old's reaction when introduced to the book. Many young children have real fears of imaginary creatures, but they'll be glad to see fun, childlike ones.
