What parents need to know

Parents need to know that kids will get great pleasure from reading these letters, and may even be inspired to write letters of their own.

What's the story?

In this second installment in the Felix series, Sophie's stuffed rabbit goes back in time to visit six historical periods: the Stone Age, ancient Greece, the Viking era, the Middle Ages, feudal Japan, and North America before the displacement of Native Americans.

As in the other books in the series, Felix writes letter to Sophie, which are enclosed in envelopes glued to the pages. A pull-out poster at the end shows the places Felix visited and inclues a timeline with brief information about each period.

Is it any good?

Though it's a little more didactic than some of the other books in the series, this entry is still enjoyable, mainly because of the author's inspired gimmick -- the letters. Kids will derive great pleasure from taking the letters out of the envelopes and reading them until they become tattered. And, even in this e-mail age, some children may be inspired to write letters of their own.

What families can talk about

Families can talk about the notion of time travel. What do you think it would be like to travel to a different time? How do the characters in the book react to going back in time?
