Letters from Felix: A Little Rabbit on a World Tour
Common Sense Note
Parents need to know that this story is a charming excuse for the travelogue, but the letters are endlessly fascinating.
Families can talk about when toys take off on vacation. Have you ever lost a toy? Did you ever get a letter from him or her? Can you pretend you are your favorite toy and write a letter about your toy adventures? What was the favorite letter you ever got?
Common Sense Review
Reviewed By: Matt Berman
There are few children, or parents, who can resist this captivating idea. Stories about favorite stuffed animals who have lives of their own always set kids' imaginations running. But this book, which contains actual letters (and even a photo!) from Felix that look handwritten (with little doodles and inkblots) and can be taken out of their envelopes, adds an extra layer of magic.
Parents reading it with their children will be equally charmed by Sophie's large, ragamuffin family, and by the doses of learning that the book gives so painlessly. It inspires children in so many ways -- to find out more about the places Felix visits, to imagine adventures for their own favorite toys, and to create letters written by them.
Little details in the pictures tell stories of their own. For example, after Felix is lost, Sophie's little sister, Lena, draws her a picture of Felix to cheer her up. Nine pages later you can find that same picture hanging beside Sophie's bunk bed. Felix's suitcase keeps acquiring more stickers, the same ones that can be found in the suitcase at the end. It's the cleverness and attention to detail that keep kids poring over this book until it becomes dog-eared.
From The Book
Sophie slowly makes her way home. She doesn't want to think about how there will be no more Felix waiting for her in her room. ... But why is Mom so excited? She is waving something in the air, and she calls, ÒSophie, look! There is some mail for you!Ó ... Amazed--who could write in such a squiggly scrawl?--Sophie turns the envelope over.
Plot Summary:
After Felix, Sophie's stuffed rabbit toy, disappears at the airport, Sophie starts receiving letters from him as he travels around the world. This first entry in the series sets the format -- Felix travels somewhere and sends back letters, which are enclosed in little envelopes glued into the book. Rarely is learning so enchanting.
