Parents need to know

Parents need to know that for a young adult novel there is little of concern here -- a kiss, a brief kid fight, some candy, and pipe smoking by an adult.

Families can talk about Stargirl's eccentric education. What is she learning? Is she missing out on anything by not going to school and not having classes at home? What does she gain by not going to a regular school? Why is she so lonely, even surrounded by people who care about her?

Message

Social Behavior:

Stargirl is thoughtful towards others, and is always herself.

Consumerism:

Some candy products mentioned.

Drugs/Alcohol/Tobacco:

Pipe smoking.

Violence

A fistfight.

Sex

A kiss, and a little boy moons his sister.

What's the story?

Reviewed by Matt Berman

Stargirl, living now in Pennsylvania, tells her own story this time, in "the world's longest letter," which is actually a series of journal entries. New in town, homeschooled, and feeling rejected by Leo, the 16-year-old narrator of the first book who had fallen under her spell, she is lonely and sad -- her "happy wagon," where she keeps stones representing her level of happiness, is almost empty.

But this eccentric extrovert begins to meet new people, and Stargirl's life soon includes a little girl, a middle-aged agoraphobic, the donut lady, a crabby tween, an elderly man who spends all his time at his wife's grave, and a possible delinquent. But she's still pining for Leo.

Is it any good?

In Stargirl, author Jerry Spinelli had a lot to say about high school, conformity, and individuality. In many ways allegorical, it was concerned with big ideas, and became a staple of classroom literature discussion groups. This sequel is a more personal story in which we get to know Stargirl from the inside out.

From the inside Stargirl is a lot less confident than she seemed in the first book. She spends a good portion of the book pining for Leo, and feeling generally depressed and sad. Gone, for the most part, is that magically effervescent spirit that made her such an intriguing mystery. In its place is a more realistic girl with whom the reader can identify.

It's unusual for a sequel to be so unlike its predecessor -- the characters (except for Stargirl herself), mood, tone, setting, point of view, and writing style are all different. But Spinelli has never been one to follow the beaten path. Readers who were hoping for something similar in tone and feeling to the first book may be disappointed, but those who wanted to bring Stargirl down to Earth and get to know her a bit will be thrilled.

This book is really great. Mostly for kids in a high 4th grade lever or older. It is touching. Sensitive boys and most girls will love it.

If you are thinking this book is exactly like "Stargirl," then you're wrong. It's a great book, but way different from the first book. This book doesn't really have a plot line, but the author makes it work. Stargirl never really goes thru the hurt, betrayal and outcastment that she went thru in "Stargirl." I liked this book because it was showed that because Stargirl accepts who she is and doesn't try to change that, she is a happier person. She shows its okay to be different and stand out from the crowd, and I think that's an important message to discuss. She also shows that she's heartbroken over Leo, and is still in like with him (she's not in love with him, so she's in like with him). An overall feel-good book.

I loved the book!

Love, Stargirl was a very good book, but you have to read stargirl first. That is the first book. It is about a girl named stargirl who moves away from the love of her life. The boys name is Leo.

Iffy

I really enjoyed reading the 1st book; Stargirl. And when this book came out I went out and bought it, thinking it would pick up where the 1st one left off. But, I started reading it and realized it was just Stargirl's diary, and the other main character never was mentioned, other than in her words. It was okay though.
