What's the story?

Reviewed by Amy Brotman

Each page in this alphabet book features an upper and lower case letter, several musical terms beginning with the letter, other words beginning with the letter sprinkled throughout the artwork, and a full or double page illustration. From "A" is for anthem, allegro, alto, aria, a capella, and Louis Armstrong, to "Z" is "for zydeco, zither, and all forms of zippy music!" each page is distinctive and informative.

Some, such as "G" is for guitar, are simple and familiar. Others, such as "H" is for Hildegard and harp are more unexpected. There are six pages of musical notes in alphabetical order at the back of the book. These notes illuminate much of the information found in the A to Z pages.

Is it any good?

This is a compendium of musical terms, styles, instruments, and personalities put together in the unusual form of an alphabet book. The oil and acrylic artwork is sophisticated, interesting, and beautiful, and the design of the book is stunning. The sophisticated artwork and format may be a bit difficult for younger children (those for whom alphabet books are normally written). The average child may find the focus on such a wide variety of musical information a bit daunting, but for the child who loves music, this is a must.

From the book:
"Without music to decorate it, time is just a bunch of boring production deadlines and dates by which bills must be paid." --Frank Zappa
