What parents need to know

Parents need to know that they shouldn't be fooled by the alphabet book format. This is a treat for older children who love music.

What's the story?

Each page in this alphabet book features an upper and lower case letter, several musical terms beginning with the letter, other words beginning with the letter sprinkled throughout the artwork, and a full or double page illustration. From "A" is for anthem, allegro, alto, aria, a capella, and Louis Armstrong, to "Z" is "for zydeco, zither, and all forms of zippy music!" each page is distinctive and informative.

Some, such as "G" is for guitar, are simple and familiar. Others, such as "H" is for Hildegard and harp are more unexpected. There are six pages of musical notes in alphabetical order at the back of the book. These notes illuminate much of the information found in the A to Z pages.

Is it any good?

This is a compendium of musical terms, styles, instruments, and personalities in the unusual form of an alphabet book. The oil and acrylic artwork is sophisticated, interesting, and beautiful, and the book's design is stunning. The sophisticated artwork and format may be difficult for younger children (those for whom alphabet books are normally written). The average child may find the focus on such a wide variety of musical information a bit daunting, but for the child who loves music, this is a must.
