What to watch out for

  • Messages:

This story, originally published in 1973, uses the now politically incorrect term, "wetback." At one point Jose wishes he were white.
  • Violence:

Jose's dog attacks a man who threatens him. A wooden splinter pierces Jose's shoulder.
  • Sex:

Several scenes, one in a communal shower, where a man clearly, though not explicitly, intends to molest Jose.
  • Language:

    Not an issue.
  • Consumerism:

    Not an issue.
  • Drinking, drugs, & smoking:

Several scenes where adults drink; drunkeness is mentioned.

What Parents Need to Know

About The Maldonado Miracle

Parents need to know that some of the content, especially the potential molester, is inappropriate for the younger end of the publisher's age recommendations. Older kids may not be clear about his intentions and have questions for parents and teachers.
