What parents need to know

Parents need to know that there is nothing of concern in this book with thoughtful prose and dynamic illustrations.

What's the story?

The smell of rain makes a boy consider all the nice things to do inside on a rainy day, but in the end he decides to go outside and splash in his red rubber boots. The vivid illustrations make every activity, especially the splash scenes, look like fun to preschoolers.

Is it any good?

The narrative, although spare, is at times engaging, warm, and childlike: "If it's slippery window-spashy rain, I make a party with my dishes." The quiet, thoughtful pace appeals to children.

Lauren Stringer's double-page spreads are bold and bright and full of sweeping movement, interesting angles, and luminous, rich color. The boy's cats add extra interest; one presses its paws against the screen door, echoing the placement of the boy's palms. The cats follow the boy throughout the house: One plays with crayons and wears a hat at the tea party.
