What parents need to know

Parents need to know that children will quickly learn the repetitive Q&A format.

What's the story?

WHO USES THIS? is an ideal book for stimulating children's imaginations and promoting role-play. Margaret Miller's flawless photography introduces children to the specialized tools used in nine professions, along with the adults who use them in their work. Young readers especially enjoy seeing other children trying out these grown-up tools.

Is it any good?

Children as young as 3 proudly announce what they want to be when they grow up. Firefighter, store clerk, teacher, and doctor are common choices because these are the jobs they see people doing. WHO USES THIS? expands their understanding of the work people do. Now children may imagine themselves as carpenters, jugglers, football players, bakers, gardeners, dog walkers, conductors, barbers, or artists.

Three photographs are presented for each tool to reinforce how implements are used by these professionals. The text reads, "Who uses this?" and on the facing page the tool is pictured in isolation against a color background. Turning the page answers the question, as two full-page photographs show a professional using the tool at work and a child using the tool to role-play. Children from various ethnic backgrounds are represented.
