What to talk about

Talk to your kids
Families can talk about their favorite books. Better yet, make a list. Better yet, make a book review newsletter to share with friends and family. Also, how does being an avid reader benefit the boy in the story throughout his life?

What's the story?

What's the story?
Sam's literature appreciation starts out in his crib thanks in part to the efforts of his "perfect patient mother" who is willing to read his favorites out loud over and over again. As he grows, Sam's love of words grows, too, until he's able to help his parents shop and get around town by reading street signs. Of course he loves books, too, and his vast store of knowledge comes in handy when the doctor is stymied by his sickness, and even when a giant comes to call.

Is it any good?

Is it any good?

A picture book that's after every library-loving parent's heart, this is a joyful celebration of reading. There's no doubt -- reading helps Sam become a hero. And that's a message every kid ought to have.

Kids might be familiar with Marc Brown's drawing style from the famous Arthur books or from watching the even more famous TV show, which is based on the series. But even if they're not, they'll love his colorful style that boasts lots of detail and texture. Kids will also enjoy catching sight of their own favorite picture books in Sam's collection (including a shout-out to good old Arthur, of course). With a moral that parents will love and a story that will keep kids entertained, this book is a winner all the way around.
