Parents need to know that this lovely book does a great job of connecting kids to the origins of some favorite homemade foods.
This story about Edna Lewis, a famous African-American chef, follows the growing season on her Southern farm. From fresh spring greens to crisp fall apples, her family harvests food and talks about the good things they will make to eat. Canning their own vegetables, baking their own pies -- this family is an inspiration for budding chefs and their families.
Fruits and veggies never looked so delicious! The sweet narrative is interspersed with poems that can help even wriggly kids with short attention spans tune in. The dreamy watercolors are imbued with rich colors ably conveying the sense of busyness and nostalgia all at once.
Families can talk about where food comes from and how it grows. If they don't have their own backyard garden to visit, they can head to the farmer's market or to a pick-your-own farm and then try their hands at some of the recipes in the back of the book.
