Parents need to know this book has sibling rivalry, one wild party, and some scheming to cheat on tests and get out of chores. The great thing is, like most middle school kids, the characters get caught and are punished.
Positive messages:Sibling rivalry, mean pranks played at school, and some plots for cheating, but nothing feels too mean-spirited and the humor is often based on lessons the clueless main character should be learning (and readers will get themselves).
Positive role models:Greg can be pretty mean to his friends, is sarcastic, often has poor judgment, and gets caught in a lie -- all lead to lessons and consequences. His mother does a great job of reeling him back in when he makes mistakes.
Violence:Rodrick draws some violent cartoons, including one of his brother Greg being pushed off a cliff. A boy is shown injured when he kicks something heavy.
Sex:A kid gets kuddos for getting into the opposite sex's bathroom at school. Boys are described as trying to get girls to be interested in them.
Language:Mild name calling, like "jerk" and "nerd."
I LOVE THIS BOOK! IT'S REALLY FUNNY!!!! IT'S THE TYPE OF BOOK THAT PRETTY MUCH EVERYONE WOULD LIKE. I HAVE EVERY SINGLE DIARY OF A WIMPY KID BOOK MADE!
While the attitude of the main character is not always what I would like to see (lazy, at timesnegative) it is a reality that my son relates too. It's a book he reads over and over. This series is what 'hooked' my son on reading, so I'd recommend it as a good entry book.
I have to admit it -- when I read my daughter's copy, I laughed until I cried. There are absolutely no positive role models, which is why this book isn't appropriate for younger kids. One thing I like a lot about the series is that _all_ the characters have their own weaknesses and quirks - just like real life.
this was a good book. im not trying to be like a parent though but i think the drawings in this book are nasty. rodrick draws greg being pushed off a cliff, and the violent movie project shows violent pictures like a knife sticking out of a skull and a guy shooting a tank & the tanks shooting a building thats being bombed too. also, greg draws a picture that says dont smoke or youll look like me with a ugly guy smoking and he also talks about a kid smoking too.
some bullying language "jerk" and "nerd", and a kid gets kuddos for getting into the opposite sex's bathroom at school. and the boys are described as trying to get girls to be interested in them, a student from high school smokes is seen in a book, and greg and rodrick draws pictures of each other being pushed off a cliff, which this diary of a wimpy kid series is way more different than the part one, notice: diary of a wimpy kid 2 rodrick rules movie will be in theaters in march 2011
