Book Summary
Trina, Leticia, and Dominique all tell the story of one day from their various perspectives. In this one day a misunderstanding turns violent and lives are changed forever. Is It Any Good?
Rita Williams-Garcia's book JUMPED is really only good to use as an example of antisocial behavior run amok in a school that seemingly has only enough adult authority to keep students barely in line. The short book focuses on three girls who manage to stir up contempt for their characters instead of fostering any concern about their reasons or motivations for their behavior.
The Gossip Girl series is often criticized for its rampant sex, consumerism, and bad girl behavior, but the characters from Jumped could fit right in if they were of a higher socio-economic status. The conclusion is both horrific in the level of violence and the lack of remorse by several of the characters. At the end of this novel many readers will ask "What's the point?" The novel isn't a gritty commentary of violence in school, but an exploitive, boring, and short-sighted waste of time.
