Why We Rated This iffy for Ages 14–16

The good stuff

  • Educational value:

    Not an issue.
  • Messages:

There are many examples of negative behavior and absent parenting, however the positive examples of friendship are what makes the difference in this novel.
  • Role models:

There are several positive adult and teen role models in this novel and they help those struggling navigate. Most of the teens, whether they've made bad decisions or not, are honest about their feelings, which is something that parents would love their kids to model.

What to watch out for

  • Violence:

A girl has a first sexual encounter that is rough and she bleeds after; she describes the blood as part of a memory. A man is known for beating up his wife and son.

  • Sex:

There are discussions of multiple "hook-ups" between the main character and a variety of boys, one results in a pregnancy. A girl is referred to having an abortion and in one sexual encounter it is believed a condom broke. A girl describes feeling semen.
  • Language:

Some swear words like "asshole" and "bitch" are used, plus a couple uses of "f--k." It is more common teenage banter than excessive.
  • Consumerism:

    Not an issue.
  • Drinking, drugs, & smoking:

There is at least two adults that engage in alcohol abuse and teens are often seen drinking. One adult gives a teen a beer and they drink together.

Families Can Talk About

  • Families can talk about peer pressure. Why is there so much pressure to have sex? Do your friends talk about it a lot?
  • Families can also talk about the difference between a loving relationship and sex. What was Ellie looking for in all of her encounters? Why did she feel disappointed after the moment ended? What is the difference between having sex and being in a relationship? Name some positive things that come from being in a relationship with someone before you have sex.
  • How were Corinne and Caleb good friends to Ellie? What can you learn from their friendship that you can apply to your own relationships?

    Wonderful Teen Novel

This book has a lot of sexual content and language. Ellie has a reputation for hooking up with anyone who gives her a compliment. She thinks every time she's with a guy that they want more than just sex. But each time her heart is broken and she does it again. She doesn't learn her lesson until she is actually pregnant. At first Ellie may not seem like a good role model at first, but she does put her friendships first as do the other characters. It isn't appropriate for younger children, but good for more mature teens.
