Sex- and prank-filled IM book -- POS time.

Why We Rated This iffy for Ages 15–18

What to watch out for

  • Messages:

Teens have tight bond and are a good support system, but they also encourage one another to participate in "getting back" at classmates with mean pranks. A character of color is included in this predominantly white school.
  • Violence:

    Not an issue.
  • Sex:

Teen loses virginity, performs oral sex, describes safe sex practice, kissing, fondling. Stepmother caught having affair with another man. Aunt of character has party with sex toy theme.
  • Language:

Plenty of swear words like "holy s--t," "damn," "dumbass," f--kers," "hell."
  • Consumerism:

Name dropping of celebrities, stores, and products, such as Starbucks and Jeep.
  • Drinking, drugs, & smoking:

Drinking beer and throwing up, Vicadin is offered at parties, references to classmates who use drugs.

What Parents Need to Know

About l8r, g8r

Parents need to know that it's POS time with this one (that's "parent over shoulder"). There's more sex and bad behavior on display than in the others in the instant message-heavy series. One main character loses her virginity, while the other two also have romantic, physical relationships with boyfriends. Teens drink heavily and throw up, participating in drinking games, and there are references to using drugs and abusing prescription drugs. Mean-spirited pranks include posting a faux ad for sex. A stepmom has an affair. An aunt has a party with a sex toy theme.

Families Can Talk About

  • Families can talk about communication through instant messaging. Is something lost in the translation? Have you ever had a disastrous IM miscommunication? Why is interpreting body language so important? How do you convey the tone of what you text or IM? Parents can also point out and discuss how the characters talk about safe sex.

Iffy for kids, but teen IMing addicts will love this!

This was a book that I could not put down. It was very good and intriguing. Sex, drugs, and alcohol are huge issues in this book (which are main topics), and like in all of the other Internet Girls books, there is also language. I am a computer addict who lives IMing, so this book was very enjoyable to me.

although this book isn't the best book to read because of sex, alcohol && some drug references, i think that it is still a good over all book. x] i think you should read the book first && then write a review stating if you like it or not because you just can't judge a book by it's cover. all together i enjoyed this book && the series && i hope you all will too. :]
