Parents need to know that this book follows a grand tradition of humble trees who aspire to be Christmas trees. There is nothing offensive about this book.
A little Christmas tree yearns to be a celebrated Christmas tree.
This is a slight but inoffensive book for holiday reading. The classic style of illustration -- small animals in human clothing writ in great detail -- helps bolster the timelessness credentials of the story.
Treacle? Sure. And while parents may roll their eyes when requested to read it yet again, young children will root for the little tree and they'll be satisfied with the ending, which places a kid in the role of hero. A more soothing Christmas bedtime story is hard to imagine.
Families can talk about their own holiday traditions. Do you decorate a Christmas tree each year? If so, do you chop one down, buy one at a lot, or pull a fake one out of the basement?
