What parents need to know

Parents need to know that the violence is much milder here than in other vampire books -- two teens are presumed dead, but it's barely described. There's some swearing (including "f--k"), teen use of alcohol and pot (looked upon unfavorably by the main character), and a teen receiving oral sex in the dorm hallway -- it's barely described but often referred to. Some readers may dislike the way the main character and all her teen fledgling vampire friends embrace goddess worship and participate in a number of well-described ceremonies. This worship is contrasted with the church the main character's stepfather belongs to -- the fictitious, fundamentalist-sounding People of Faith, whom she believes are narrow minded.

  • Zoey is a positive character who rejects a boyfriend because he drinks heavily. She then works to take down school bullies by taking the high road. But Zoey also looks down on her stepfather's religious group, the People of Faith, calling them narrow-minded, while embracing the vampire rituals of goddess worship. She combines these with rituals from her Cherokee heritage.
  • If fledging vampires don't adapt to the Change, they're told that they die suddenly -- two students are hauled away under those circumstances. Zoey falls and gashes open her head. Some vampire bloodletting and drinking of blood. Brief allusion to father-daughter sexual abuse. Mention of Amazon women cutting off their right breasts.
  • Teen kissing, some passionate. Zoey says her older sister has "screwed half the football team." A girl gives a guy a blow job in the hallway, barely described but often referred to. Sexy dancing at ceremonies.
  • "F--k," and "f--king bitch" are the worst offenders. "Hell" is said the most often. Plus "s--t," "bulls--t," "ho," and "ass."
  • Lots of name-dropping of all kinds. Clothing stores, cereal brands (especial Count Chocula), VW Bug, video game Delta Force: Black Hawk Down, celebs (Ashton Kutcher, Leonardo DiCaprio, Paris Hilton), movies (French Kiss, Star Wars), TV shows (MTV's The Real World, America's Next Top Model, Star Trek, That '70s Show), top country singers, Gossip Girl books, soda brands, and some labels (Steve Madden shoes, Maui Jim sunglasses).
  • Scenes of regular high school students drunk and smoking pot; this is looked upon unfavorably by the main character. Wine served with dinner and in goddess ceremonies. Pot is mixed with incense in one ceremony.

What's the story?

Zoey, a very regular high school student, is visited in the hall one day by a vampire tracker and marked with a crescent moon -- the sign that she needs to report to the fledgling teen vampire school, called House of Night. Her parents reject the idea, so she runs to her Cherokee grandmother for guidance, only to have a vision of the Goddess Nyx telling her that she has a special purpose at the school. When she arrives at House of Night, it's only too obvious that some cruel forces are at work -- the head of the sorority-like Dark Daughters, Aphrodite, proves to be a powerful and devious adversary -- but Zoey discovers extra abilities from the goddess to fight her rule over the school.

Is it any good?

Written by a fantasy writer and her college-age daughter, this definitely feels more like a fun mother-daughter project than serious sci-fi. There's more gossiping and bad-girl behavior than bloody fangs and supernatural creature battles. In fact, the transition from talking smack about the school bully to casting a circle of elements for goddess worship can get pretty jarring. The authors try too hard to please both the Gossip Girl crowd and Twilighters. There's even a hot older love interest -- a vampire who's also a famous actor (take that, Edward!).

With the vampire training school setting, the authors are also going for Harry Potter grads. But the descriptions of classes aren't nearly as fun, and the pace slows as every hall break and class direction is described. But as the main character gets more comfortable with her powers and the story focuses on a few mysteries at the school, readers will feel more engaged. Plus, the most intriguing mystery is left for the next book in the series. For vampire fans, here's hoping that one's more of a page-turner.

What families can talk about

Families can talk about the occult aspects of this book, discussing their beliefs on the subject. Do you think Zoey could have been another religion and still joined the school, or do goddess worship and vampirism have to go hand in hand in this book? How do you think this vampire series compares to others -- like the Twilight Saga? Which version of vampire lore do you prefer? Why?

Great Book For Mature Kids
This book was really great for me to read; I swallowed it down in one day. There is some stuff, but if a 11 year old wants to read it, it's okay. It really all depends on how much the kid knows and how mature they are. If you ignore that stuff, you will really enjoy the book!

It really depends on how mature you are and what you can handle
Im 11 and i have read almost everyone but really i dont think i should be reading this but im VERY mature for my age and i wont and dont go around showing off the bad words and the kissing stuff to my friends like some kids do but i think the age level should be 15+ but it really depends on what your parents say if my mom knew what was in it she prob. whouldn't let me read it. But it really depends

Parents Beware!
Storyline did not interest me as an adult reader. Teens and preteens would probably like the storyline, unfortunately there is content that is, in my opinion, way too sexually explicit. I'm not even comfortable with my 15 yr old reading it. It really is just the one scene but it is referred to throughout the book.

If you ahve a life, if your mature, and you want to read a good book you can relate to. A-friggn-mazing!
First off, let me exclaim that YES, I am CATHOLIC and this whole story made me laugh and I love it to pieces. With that being said, I am not in any way shape or form offended by the way P.C & K describe 'the People of The Faith'. Hello! Most of what they do is true and the way of thinking is common through some ‘super-religious’ people. Now I'm not saying they are narrow minded- but has ANYONE considered that this 'group' could be a CULT? Yes, I said it. A CULT! That does mean that certain people can think a certain way and have their own faith. And yeah, cults are just made up about a whole bunch of stuff. Hello, being Christian, isn't that part of being one? Ahem "cult? ?/k?lt/ Show Spelled[kuhlt] Show IPA –noun 1.a particular system of religious worship, esp. with reference to its rites and ceremonies. " dictionary.reference*/browse/cult that's where I got that reference and ye there is a whole bunch more part of the definition. Anyway, have read every book and I'm currently counting down the days until the next one comes out. They are SO well written and the images that you can make in your head from reading the amazing descriptions is wonderful. YES there is sex YES there is alcohol YES drugs are mentioned BUT HELLO! WAKE UP WORLD! THIS HAPPENS ALL THE TIME! If any other teenager can argue against this and tell me that they have NEVER EVER seen, done, or knows a friend who has, you live in a freaking bubble and you really don’t have a life. To be honest. They teach you in school about ALL OF THIS! ‘Sex is bad’ ‘drugs are bad’ ‘don’t drink it can ruin your health’ YES YES YES AND YES!! ALL TRUE! I have NEVER smoked in my life, drink because I am of age and having sex is your decision – even though you should wait for your prince/princess. This book is giving the RALITY of life around a teenager. You go to your high school, look across the street, look under the bleachers, check bags and lockers, even go into the firggn bathrooms! Everything is everywhere and being in high school you will see it all. Going into the world for crying out loud! You will find and see it. And hell yeah it’s bad, but it’s just facts. I don’t know what perfect-caker-town exists in the real world. Nothing is perfect. When you read this book you can relate to one thing or another. There are SO may scenarios and crazy events that take place in this series that SOMETHING has to relate to you somehow. And that’s EXACTLY what P.C & K want!! Their showing the TRUTH! What teenagers REALY do, how they REALLY ACT and how they REALLY talk. No one can tell me that they haven’t ever swore, or drank, or even smoked? PARENTS! WAKE UP! THIS IS REALITY CALLING! We teens KNOW what’s going on. We see media and we DO understand. We KNOW drugs are bad, skipping class is bad, drinking is bad. And people make the decision to go against what their parent’s wishes are. This book shows so many different ways that a teenager’s life can twin – with the added smack of being Vamp. Amazing, amazing story. I cried and I understood how the characters felt. Throughout the entire book. If people are ‘grossed out’ and ‘disappointed’ with the way P.C & K write – THEN DON’T READ THE BOOK! Before you read a book, take some time and do some research. Don’t like it don’t read it and DO NOT bash an author’s amazing work. I am an obsessive writer myself and I know what it’s like when people read what I wrote and TOOK THINGS THE WRONG WAY or took things to the EXTREAM. Which was never needed. I think people should just RELAX, take a chill pill and avoid books that they don’t like. End of story.

Its good... skipping some parts
It was a good book. Not one of my favorites, but I liked it. It takes a fresh look at the vampyre world, which was nice, considering all society is aware of them. I was looking for Count Chocula the other day in the super market haha... There's the regular use of h*** and h*o. And the one thing that really bothered me was that they worship this "goddess" and it really bugs cause Zoey has to stop every dang 3 pages to "pray to the goddess". Oh, and the "people of faith" stuff. So I skip those parts.

14 Plus is pushing it.... I would say that this book is for 17 plus...
This book is located in my 14 year old's 8th grade school library. A library which 6th graders also have access. I read the book. While I enjoyed the book, I would not recommend it for young teens. It mentions oral sex and the slang term for that on 6 pages. It contains reference to, and the slang term for it, a female piercing in the nether region once. It says the "f" word on 7 pages. It says "sh*t" on 13 pages. Sex is mentioned on two pages. References to pot, weed, etc. on 4 pages. "B*tch" is on 10 pages. "H*ll" is on 66 pages. It has references to and describes cult behavior and cerimonies on numerous occasions. One of the male characters is openly gay. This is not so much a reveiw as a warning to parents to read this book before you decide to allow your children to do so. You may like the book, as I did, however, you may not approve of your teens reading it without some supervision and discussion...

Not appropriate for anyone below high school age
I have read this and will not put it in my classroom library for my 8th graders. The opening chapter involves a girl walking up on another girl performing oral sex on a boy in a school hallway. The words the girls call each other are derogatory and unnecessary. There are too many good books out there for middle schoolers to be wasting their time with this one. Regardless of what we think they have heard or seen at home on the internet and t.v., we need to think about what we provide for them to read in our own classroom libraries. Also, as a parent, I wouldn't want my almost-13 year-old daughter reading this when there are so many other quality books available.
