What parents need to know

Parents need to know that there's some violence here, though mild compared to many fantasies aimed at this age group: teens are threatened and attacked by monsters, one character dies, and another appears to. There's some wordplay with the word "dam."

Educational value: Infuses Greek myths and characters in the plot.
Positive messages: Throughout the series are lessons in friendship and loyalty.
Positive role models: Percy is loyal, kind, and determined to help his friends, even when they're not always nice to him.
Violence: Some fantasy fighting, a semi-major character is killed by a dragon, another evil character falls off a cliff and appears to be dead, teens are threatened and attacked by monsters.
Sex: Not applicable.
Language: A lot of play with almost swearing about a dam they visit: eg. "Where was the dam snack bar?"
Consumerism: Car, snack, soft drink, department store, electronics brands. Band names: White Stripes, Led Zeppelin.
Drinking, drugs, & smoking: A mention of adults drinking wine. A reference to drinking and drunk driving.

What to talk about

Talk to your kids
  • Families can talk about Artemis and her followers. Why do you think they were so opposed to men? What do they tell you about the culture from which they come?

  • How do they fit into the modern culture of the book? Why would girls choose to join her followers?

What's the story?

What's the story?

When his friend Annabeth and the goddess Artemis both disappear just before the winter solstice, and when Artemis must be on Mt. Olympus to convince the gods to prepare for a war with the titans, Percy, his friends, and two of Artemis' followers set out to rescue them, led by a prophecy and Percy's dreams. But Kronos is preparing an elaborate trap for them, and Luke has been gathering an ever larger army.

Is it any good?

Is it any good?

Rick Riordan shows how formula fiction should be done. Each novel in the series so far follows the same basic path: Percy goes on a quest that usually involves both rescuing someone close to him and at the same time accomplishing some task for the gods. All of these stories are part of an overarching story arc that involves the reawakening of the evil titan Kronos and a coming second apocalyptic battle between the gods and titans, presumably in book 5.

This kind of predictability is appealing to middle-grade readers, who like the comfort factor. So it is up to the author to keep it interesting and fresh. This Riordan does with a now practically trademarked blend of action that seems more violent than it is, witty humor that doesn't pander, and a wealth of hilarious modern takes on classical myths, all told by an appealingly loyal and self-deprecating hero. So far the author has been predictable in one other way as well -- the fun and the quality are both consistently high.

From the Book:
The driver got out, smiling. He looked about seventeen or eighteen, and for a second I had the uneasy feeling it was Luke, my old enemy. This guy had the same sandy hair and outdoorsy good looks. But it wasn't Luke. This guy was taller, with no scar on his face like Luke's. His smile was brighter and more playful (Luke didn't do much more than scowl and sneer these days). The Maserati driver wore jeans and loafers and a sleeveless T-shirt.

"Wow," Thalia muttered. "Apollo is hot."

"He's the sun god," I said.

"That's not what I meant."

Good
They almost start cussing Thia and Percy when ther at a dam they say stuff like “where's the dam snack bar” or “where's the dam restroom” and in all of the books Percy says stuff like I cursed in ancient greek. In book 5 Percy says wow they really knew how to rhym those cuss words. But it's a great book for Tweens and teens.

THE TITANS CURSE
An awesome book. This book is my favorite in the series so far. It was written just like the old ones, and has almost all of the characters. This one is awesome!!!

I enjoyed the story, and it's action packed. The biggest problem is with the way the demigods were conceived. There is a lot of talk about the gods sleeping with humans to make the demigods. Until your child is ready to understand babies out of marriage, this book isn't for him.

Liked the Hunters, missed Annabeth.
Probably the worst one in the series....Annabeth is my favorite. The only really good part were the Hunters of Artemis!!! I'd soooo take Zoe Nightshade's place as head Huntress!

Really funny!
This is the best in the series yet! It has tons of action. It has a lot of funny parts. I agree with " leapoffaith"- the dam thing was funny, and it's not too bad. This book was hilarious.

Fun, Hilarious, Action-packed and Positive- A Buy!!
I finished this book about ten minutes ago, and I thought to myself, I HAVE to review this!! This book was totally amazing. I know, I sound like a typical, preppy teenage girl. But it's true. It really was a fun book to read, and (SPOILER ALERT!!) I LOVED the Percy/Aphrodite scene; mostly because it TOTALLY FORESHADOWED (SPOILER ALERT!!) Percy falling in love with Annabeth!!! I LOVE LOVE!!! Anyway. Don't worry about the violence; it wasn't bad. And don't worry about the "dam" thing... it was so freaking funny... trust me, if you read it, you won't have a problem with it. Totally hilarious. Definitely the funniest part of the book! Totally educational. Every book in this series I read, I learn something new about Greek mythology. Really, really good messages, such as loyalty, friendship, dealing with loss and letting people down, and Percy fights for a sea creatures life towards the end. Great messages. GREAT, GREAT role models. The people you'd think to be models- the Greek gods- most of the time aren't. Percy, Grover, Thalia, Zoe, and Bianca are certainly keepers. Percy, the heroine, is loyal and a great friend. Grover is a nature lover and, frankly, lovable. Thalia is her own self, even when she's been through bad stuff. Zoe is rough on the outside, but learns to open up. Bianca is amazingly brave. It's all a great, overall, positive book. Not to mention it's FUN! Very, very fun to read. All the PJO books are. Fun, hilarious, positive, and action-packed, The Titan's Curse is just as good- if not better- than it's two predecessors. Buy this one! :D

Never had a book this good before

read first
this series is very dark and violent. no question. there is also a lot of swearing, even if it is alternative swear words. I would proceed with caution. Know your child's limits. I read the series before proceeding and suggest the same for anyone.
