Parents need to know

Parents need to know that this is a game based on the Disney TV show Hannah Montana. It requires kids to do a lot of reading to solve the interactive mysteries. Playing as Hannah, kids have the option of talking back to her brother or to mean girls at school, but there are consequences. Hannah and other characters skip school and one character hires another student to do his homework. Also, Hannah labels herself as "mathematically deficient," a defeatist attitude that far too many girls have already.

Families can talk about how difficult it would be to have a secret identity. Would you want to be famous and have the paparazzi following you? How did you feel when Amber and Ashley blocked your way and said things that were hurtful? Did you choose to dish it back or did you choose take the high road and try to be nice?

What's the story?

Fans of the popular Disney TV show Hannah Montana with a Nintendo DS will be thrilled -- it's game time. But get ready to do a lot of reading as you solve mysteries with cartoon Miley and other show regulars. Just like the show, Miley lives a double life as a teen girl in school in Malibu, California, and a secret pop star known as Hannah Montana. The game offers three interactive mysteries set in five locations found around Malibu, including Miley's house, her school, the shopping mall, the beach, and the stadium where Hannah Montana performs. All three mysteries start with someone threatening to reveal Miley's secret identity as Hannah Montana. HANNAH MONTANA plays like an interactive short story, with lots of reading accompanied by some fun interactive twists.

Is it any good?

3
Although initially intriguing, Hannah Montana gets old before the game is over. While there are three mysteries to solve, by the time you are in the middle of second one, the gameplay seems repetitive because there are no new game elements. This game would have been better if the developers had introduced new gadgets, new locations, and more Mini games within each mystery.

Even so, fans of the show will enjoy this game because it stays true to the brand. The cartoon versions of the cast catch the visual and verbal nuances of the actors, and the look and feel of the Malibu world transfer well to this 3-D video game world.

How to play

  • Playability: Easy to play using the DS Stylus.
  • Reading Required: Heavy
  • Graphics: Good depiction of TV show.

A Little Difficult

I'm new to DS playing and this is my first game, and it is a little difficult for me. I like it because it is Miley/Hannah Montana, they could have made it a little simplier for the younger fans to understand. More instruction and less mystery (repition) would have been nice.

Hannah Montana

Sexual Content (Not an Issue): None. Violence (Not an Issue): None. Language (Not an Issue): None. Social Behavior (Pause): Characters lie, cheat, and play hooky, and are not punished for their behavior. However, if you are in a conversation with someone, you won't get where you're going unless you are kind. Commercialism (Not an Issue): Based on the TV show. Educational Value (On): Players must draw shapes and think logically to advance through the game.

Funny Show, But I Wish the Younger Girls Didn't Like It So Much!

My 7-1/2-year old daughter loves this show, as do most of her 2nd-grade friends. I know it seems glamorous to them. It is hard to convey that it is simply entertainment and fantasy-like to young kids, although my daughter says she understands that it would be unlikely to ever happen in the real world. Plus, the language and mannerisms used are much more appropriate for older teens, not young girls. On the flip side, Miley Cyrus (Hannah) adds wit and personality to the show; Emily Osmont (Lilly) reminds me of goofy characters of yesteryear, such as Lucille Ball or Mary Tyler-Moore; Mitchell Musso (Oliver) plays a befuddled sidekick so well; and Moises Arias (Rico) makes me laugh before he even says a line! Jason Earles (Jackson) is hilarious and could have his own show! The rapport he has with his father is very funny, and his timing and facial gestures are perfect!

Good game, but shape-drawing can be tricky

While this game does have a few bad messages (Rico hires Oliver to do his homework for him, although Miley does tell him to stop cheating, most of the characters skip school), this game is pretty good. But it is very repetitive, and it gets very boring. You have to draw shapes to get through the game, which confused both me and my mother for about 20 minutes. (Just to let you guys know, you have to start at the circle and end at the triangle.) And you get two things to say to Jackson, Oliver, Amber, and Ashley whenever they get in your way: something nice or something rude. If you're nice, you can breeze through the game easily, but if you're rude, they won't let you on through. What a great message, huh? Good stuff for kids 8 and older.
