Common Sense Note

Parents need to know this adventure game is rated Teen because it has some suggestive sexual innuendos including comments about kissing, making love, and a woman's breasts. There is also some comic mischief (knocking characters off ledges), a mission to find a bottle of rum, and one character who smokes a cigar. This is a slower paced game that focuses on puzzle-solving and character development. It is also one of those rare games that is actually funny.

Common Sense Review

Reviewed By: Marc Saltzman

Any computer game that begins with your character – who is deathly afraid of heights -- tied to a chair at the top of Big Ben is a clear indication you're in for a humorous tale. And you are: JACK KEANE is a funny and well-written computer game inspired by the point-and-click adventure games from the '90s, namely the LucasArts "Monkey Island" titles that fused comedy with puzzles and memorable characters.

You play as Jack, a wise-cracking 19th-century sailor. Jack manages to escape loan sharks in England's famous clock tower and then is conveniently offered an assignment that will take him far away from London. He sails to a dangerous island to stop an evil scientist, Doctor T, who is threatening to destroy all the tea plants, which would drive Brits mad. You'll meet an army of apes, man-eating plants, and an attractive bounty hunter, Amanda, sent by the Doc to stop Jack in his tracks. Amanda also becomes a playable character about half-way through the game.

In case you've never played these types of adventure games, you'll navigate your character around the environment by clicking on characters and selecting responses from a list of dialogue options. You'll also pick up items and place them in your inventory to use when applicable. For example, you'll need to get past an anaconda blocking your path on a river, and when you try to go another way, a monkey is pedaling to power an electric fence. Without giving away the solution here, you'll look for items you can use, including a giant nut, screwdriver, and wooden plank (curious now, aren't you?). The story gets quite corny, but the head-scratching puzzles and funny dialogue will keep players interested to find out how Jack pulls this all off.

Other PC adventure games worth playing include Funcom's The Longest Journey and The Adventure Company's Syberia.
