What Parents Need to Know

This review of LeapPad Record & Play Microphone was written by Jinny Gudmundsen

Parents need to know that this is a very exciting addition to the LeapPad Learning System. The use of a microphone to get children involved works in many fun and creative ways. Children do not have to be reading to enjoy these books, but the ability to read brings this to a different level of learning.

What’s the Story?

The LEAPPAD RECORD & PLAY MICROPHONE set contains two books and a special microphone attached to the software cartridge that plugs into the LeapPad Learning System. At various points in the books, children are asked to speak into the microphone to record things. These recordings are cleverly incorporated into the books -- "What Will You Be?" and "The Amazing Big Top Letter Circus" -- to create a personalized learning experience.

Here are examples of how the microphone works in "What Will You Be?": Readers meet a fortune teller who asks a series of questions. When she asks the reader's name, the child speaks it into the microphone, and the child's name is used on every page of the book. On the page where the fortune teller projects that the child may be a zookeeper, the book asks the child to mimic the sounds that zoo animals make; it incorporates those sounds into subsequent games on that page.

Is It Any Good?

A great way to engage children in learning is to involve them in the process. With the LeapPad Record & Play Microphone set, children become involved in helping to create two books to use with the LeapPad system.

Both of these microphone books are highly entertaining and very clever in how they incorporate the readers' recorded sayings. The microphone works well and makes these books unique because each child participates in an individual manner. If you own a LeapPad, don't miss this exciting learning opportunity!
