What Parents Need to Know

This review of No More Heroes was written by Marc Saltzman

Parents need to know that this game is extremely violent, gory and bloody. You play as an assassin trying to become the world's top professional killer. The over-the-top violence includes the ability to use the Wii remote to quite literally dismember enemies, slice them in half, behead or disembowel them, and so on. Blood is everywhere as red becomes the prominent color in this game. It also contains many swear words and sexual innuendos.

Families Can Talk About

Talk to your kids about the media in their life. We have more tools and tips that can help
  • Families can talk about whether a game like this can stand on its own without this over-the-top violence. Or is this what makes it appealing? The game has a lot going for it, including clever camera angles, interesting (and sometimes wacky) characters, and huge environments, so does it need this gratuitous gore?

More on No More Heroes

What’s the Story?

With cel-shaded, anime-type graphics, NO MORE HEROES offers a very gory, stylized -- and quite weird -- action game experience for those who want to assume the role of a smooth assassin bent on being the world's top professional killer. Armed with a "beam katana" -- which resembles a sword and a Star Wars light saber rolled into one -- hero Travis Touchdown is out to carve himself a name in the record books.

Your job is to hack-and-slash or dropkick your way to the top by tackling skilled enemies and even tougher-but-silly-looking boss fighters. You will perform finishing moves that including beheading your opponents, slicing them in half, or even disemboweling them. You also pick up power-ups, earn cash, find collectible cards strewn throughout the levels and navigate around this colorful 3-D world on a futuristic motorcycle. Close

Is It Any Good?

In addition to over-the-top killing, you can also customize your character's look and weapons and partake in side missions and minigames, including odd diversions such as coconut gathering.

Fans of classic '80s games will pick up on, and appreciate, the nod to the golden age of interactive entertainment with many audio and visual references to this period. This mature thriller will appeal to players age 17 years and older in search of a unique game that's odd, humorous, and quite bloody. Close
