The good stuff

  • Educational value:

    Not an issue.

What to watch out for

  • Messages:

Your goal is to bring down your mentor and former colleague. The story fails to flesh out what type of character Turok portrays.
  • Violence:

Players kill dinosaurs and enemy soldiers with a bevy of guns and grenades, as well as with a bow and arrows and a knife. Stealth strikes with the knife involve stabbing an enemy in the chest or side. With dinosaurs, it can mean slitting their throats. Slaying dinosaurs is particularly gory because of the large amounts of blood.
  • Sex:

    Not an issue.
  • Language:

The foul language is most prevalent during online sessions.

What Parents Need to Know

This review of Turok was written by Brett Molina

Parents need to know that this is a violent, bloody shooter with a prehistoric twist. Beyond the assortment of firearms ranging from machine guns to rocket launchers, players will use a compound bow and combat knife. Players can sneak up and execute a quick knife kill. You can kill by slitting another's neck, and when done on Dinosaurs, those deaths look particularly gory and involve a lot of blood. The game is also open to online play, which could expose players to foul-mouthed opponents.

More on Turok

What’s the Story?

TUROK is a first-person shooter with a prehistoric twist: You can shoot aggressive dinosaurs. The main character, Joseph Turok, works for commando unit. The group must hunt down Roland Kane, Turok's former mentor and colleague in a black ops squad called the Wolf Pack. During Turok's mission, Kane's troops force Turok's ship to crash on a planet littered with dinosaurs. Throughout the game, Turok confronts two enemies: Kane's forces and bloodthirsty dinosaurs. Is It Any Good?

Ferocious dinosaurs aren't enough to make this game stand out in a crowded genre. The planet's jungle landscapes look vast but lack polish. Ambient sounds are crisp, including branches crackling under your feet. While the standard arsenal of guns and grenades are at your disposal, the knife and compound bow stand out as the most notable weapons. Turok can sneak up on enemies and execute a quick knife kill with a timed press of the right trigger. The compound bow requires precision, which makes long-distance strikes rewarding. Targeting is tricky, since the reticle moves faster than in most shooters. Your character, on the other hand, is sluggish. It takes a second to get him moving, and he feels slow even when running. Dinosaurs are aggressive, particularly once you're spotted. Kane's troops aren't as smart. Occasionally, they employ clever battle tactics, like flanking, but sneaking up on them is way too easy, as they seem oblivious to most noises.

Turok's single-player campaign strikes a healthy balance between dinosaurs and human enemies. The sudden presence of an angry dinosaur can create some tense moments at times. You also get the chance to battle more menacing foes, including a Tyrannosaurus Rex and a underwater behemoth. Unfortunately, the story is bare. Few background details exist, particularly about the origins of Turok and this mysterious planet. Multiplayer modes boast the usual deathmatch and co-op options. The inclusion of dinosaurs as well as the knife attack allows for interesting combat strategy. Diehard fans of the first-person shooter should enjoy this fresh entrée into the genre. Unfortunately, with so many stellar first person shooter choices, Turok fails to do enough to differentiate itself. Close

    Great for teens

Great game. mild swearing...most of the blood from slaying dinosaurs although you can sneak up on enemies with a knife and perform many different takedown moves including stabbing them in the chest and throat, and breaking their neck. Not as violent as many other M games but still pretty bloody. all in all i would say alright for teenagers.

if you like big game hunter u will love this!!

this is an amazing game. there is not anywhere near as much blood and gore as some people think are in this game. the only time there is blood is when u kill a dinosaur which is not as bad as killing people i mean come on the game is practically cabelas big game hunter with a little more blood and bigger animals. the game is violent yes but it is no worse than any other shooting game. and when u do kill people there is no blood. so all in all its a great game!!

    This game stinks

It has some awsome new very-realistic-features alot of other PS3 games don't have but still this game is not on the top ten list. The graphics aren't too great and the gameplay gets one-thumb-down.

    rocked

ok. this game rocked!! it had a lot of blood but it has the GEARS OF WAR blood really dark and thick. it has one of the best shots in the game by killing the dinosaurs. for crying out loud if you do not want your kid to rent it or buy it, first look it up on YOUTUBE and watch the game footage. i do this on every game i buy. i look it up on YOUTUBE and see if my mom will aprove. i know what my mom will or will not approve. so try my method for all the games. sometimes COMMONSENSE MEDIA is not always right it can be to dramatic!!
