What to watch out for

  • Messages:

In campaign mode, you portray a character seeking vengeance against an alien race after they decimate your home.
  • Violence:

Players utilize handguns, rifles, rocket launchers, and other weapons. Blood spews freely after killing an opponent. In some cases, you can see flesh scatter.

    Not an issue.
  • Language:

Quite a few curse words appear, like "s--t" and "f--k." However, their inclusion in the dialogue isn't gratuitous.

  • Drinking, drugs, & smoking:

    Not an issue.

What Parents Need to Know

This review of Unreal Tournament 3 was written by Brett Molina

Parents need to know that as a first-person shooter, this game is violent and gruesome: Blood splashes on environments on every kill, and in some instances, players are literally blown to bits, with flesh strewn across landscapes. Players will use a wide variety of weapons including handguns, rifles, and rocket launchers. Very strong language is used. This title is best played by mature audiences.

While you can customize your characters in the PS3 version, if you want to customize the maps you will have to also own the PC version. Does that feature warrant owning two copies of a game? More on Unreal Tournament 3

What’s the Story?

From the moment you start UNREAL TOURNAMENT 3, it's clear the multiplayer element is king. A single-player campaign seems like a warm-up for the more robust multiplayer modes. In it, you work as a mercenary seeking revenge against an alien race who wiped out your colony. All battles within that campaign are a series of offline matches on a wide selection of maps.

Most battles follow the standard format, like Deathmatch and Capture the Flag. Warfare is perhaps the game's best option. You must overtake a series of small nodes that link to your enemy's power source; once linked, that core is vulnerable to attack. The first team to destroy their enemy's core wins.

Is It Any Good?

Epic Games, the company behind Gears of War, makes a frenetic debut on the PS3 with the gory shooter Unreal Tournament 3. The atmosphere is intense and incredibly fast-paced, arguably the fastest shooter on any console. The game also boasts impressive customization options that have bolstered a fan base cultivated in prior PC releases.

At times, the campaigns feel repetitive. However, Unreal Tournament 3 quells those concerns with a unique set of weapons, multiple maps, and challenging opponents. An intriguing feature is the ability to create maps and other modifications on the game's PC version and transfer them onto the PlayStation 3. However, one drawback is you'll need to own both the PC and PS3 versions of the game to take advantage.

    My concerns are:
    • Excessive violence

Great game, has content moderation options...

Overall, this is an awesome addition to the Unreal franchise. Like UT2, it includes some of the best graphics available; amazing game play; and simple content altering settings which turn the game from a GOW (Gears of War) style blood bath, into a rather mild shooter. Users are given the option to remove blood/gore, extreme language, or both.

    great game

if you know the unreal series you'll be drewling over this one. fantastic graphics, the first game to use the unreal 3 engine (and bioshock used the unreal 2.5 engine just so i wont get any annoying comments) fast gameplay and everything runs really smooth, it really feels like another unreal tournament game. but besides that people in this list that commented on this game shouldtn talk about as if they even know unreal or even unreal tournament 1, so please if you want to comment on this dont say "if you know unreal" because if you dont it's kinda emberassing that your talking about a game that's older then you!. back to the game, sorry for the outburst there readers of this comment besides junior over here thinking he knows the game (i think he only knows about this game since it's been hyped to hell and it's got guys wearing armor and guns and gore, jep the typical stereotype thing a 14 year old would click on). but i really felt i should restore this games honor because it deserves it, going all the way back to unreal and ending here with this great game called unreal tournament 3, if you want fast pased action, insane gore, violence that'll blow your head off and graphics that'll make you drewl all over yourself and most importantly if you do know the unreal franchise i'd really recommend you to buy it :)!

    Great but violent game

This game is one of the best. High intensity makes this game fun for as long as you want to play it. The ability to have a guest player sign in locally on your system allows far a player to enjoy this game with a friend at heir side. The violence is a big issue, if you have ever played gears of war it is very similar to that. Offline the violence takes place against aliens but online you may be blasting apart other humans. i recommend this game to buyers 16 and above.

Liked Gears of War? If yeah, get this.

I played this for the first time on a network with plenty of my friends, and I gotta say, this is the coolest FPS I've ever played. And that's over Halo 3. The violence is kinda bad, but it's nothing we haven't already seen. Language---don't you hear bad words all the time at school and stuff? It's not too bad.
