What Parents Need to Know

This review of Wii Play was written by Jinny Gudmundsen

Parents need to know that these minigames for the Wii aren't as much fun as those found in Wii Sports, the game that was introduced with the system. And disappointingly, these games can only be played by two people instead of four. The only minigame that may raise an eyebrow for parents is the Shooting Range game. But it's simply point-and-shoot target practice involving balloons, clay pigeons, soda cans, and even UFOs.

For the games you picked up quickly, did they turn out as fun as the ones that were a challenge to learn? Do you like to push yourself to try new games or stick with the familiar? Why?

More on Wii Play

What’s the Story?

Like Wii Sports, WII PLAY offers easy entrée into playing video games and encourages those new to video gaming to give it a try. Wii Play offers nine games in either single- or two-player mode. By playing the games in order, you unlock them. The first is "Shooting Range," a game of point-and-shoot target practice involving balloons, clay pigeons, soda cans, and UFOs. Four of the games are adaptations of common activities: table tennis, fishing, billiards, and air hockey. Two others involve matching Miis, the name for the on-screen characters generated by the game or created by you as your avatar. "Charge!" a cow-racing game, and a strategy game called "Tanks!" round out the selection. Close

Is It Any Good?

Families who've been cutting their gaming teeth on Wii Sports, the game that came bundled with their Wii console, will be a little disappointed with Wii Play.

While the Wii Play games will turn the Wii controller into a fishing rod or a pool cue, the nine games just aren't as much fun to play as those found in Wii Sports, and, lacking depth, the games get old quickly. Wii Play also misses the boat for group play by limiting the multi-player option to two people instead of four. Close

    • My highlights are:
    • Safety isn't an issue

An insult to Nintendo, and The Nintendo Wii.

I know that I rarely give a bad review, but by god that game is USELESS!!!! I mean, fair enough, it shows you the ropes and all. But when Santa came last year, the first time I got the wii I had that game, and I was learning how to use it. But I had passed the game before the sun even came up. 10 minutes I'd say is all it takes. The only games on it that are enjoyable are the fishing, the tanks and the find a mii. This game should come free with the wii instead of Wii sports. It is an insult to Wii sports. Being given out for free with the console! (no offence to wii sports. It's a brilliant game worth at least 20 quid)

  3. I rate this title on for age 4 and give it 4.0
    • My highlights are:
    • Easy to play

Good game to get aquainted with the Wii. Shooting game is fun, with the option of shooting ducks (who comicaly fall to the ground, so no it's not graphic) cans, plates, targets and ufo's. Find a Mii is fun where you play a where's Wally/Waldo type game. I won't spoil the rest, but this is an essential on Wii.

See the below review for the other games.

Sorry. I decided that the "Table tennis" option is a game after a lot of consideration. This mini-game will impress no one, as the players don't even have hands. The sensitive controls also make it hard for you to guide your hand to the racket, and yes, they expected you to do that before you began.

The disc is appropriate and worth what it sells for, but not more.

Here are all the games- SHOOTING RANGE- No, it's not violent. But it seems out of place. FIND MII- People say it compares to Where's Waldo. Whether it does or not, its fun for some and boring for others. I like it, but my friends don't. POSE MII- You pose your mii to fit in bubbles. The game isn't hard, and you can go on to other levels if you try, but you probably won't be playing that long anyway, since it's near-pointless game. LASER HOCKEY- If the controls worked better, this would be great. BILLIARDS- This game has essentially no content in it. FISHING- It's a good idea, but it's not really fun. CHARGE- This is a cow racing game that can be quite fun if you understand the controls. TANKS- The tanks are toy tanks; no worries. The game can get really fun at times, but only the kids will play. The games all have different pros and cons.
