What parents need to know

Parents need to know that Adventure World - An Indiana Jones Game is a movie-inspired adventure game played on the Facebook social network. Having a large number of active neighbors -- Facebook friends who are also playing the game -- is essential to advancing in Adventure World, as neighbors help with everything from completing buildings, purchasing land expansions, and gifting raw materials, to manning the crews needed to embark on quests. Adventure World is free to play, but players are constantly tempted to spend real-world money to speed up and extend the game.

  • Players rise through the ranks of the Adventure Society by exploring, finding artifacts to sell, and defeating any wildlife that gets in the way. Success in the game relies heavily on Facebook players helping each other out with gifts and quest assistance.
  • The other characters in the game are pleasant and helpful, and help the player by providing various services and advice.
  • It's easy to get the hang of the gameplay, which is controlled with left mouse-clicks. Tutorials and prompts guide the player through what to do next.
  • Players frequently encounter aggressive animals, like spiders and snakes, which must be defeated using Indiana Jones' signature whip. There's no blood or gore, and enemies simply disappear when defeated. Damage is indicated by a depleting an energy bar.

  • Players are frequently prompted to speed up the game by spending the premium currency, which is purchased with real-world money. Friends are also essential to advancing in the game, and players are encouraged to post messages on their friends' Facebook walls asking for help.
  • Some privacy concerns. This game requires players to have a large number of Facebook friends who are also playing the game in order to be successful, and thus creates the temptation to "friend" strangers on Facebook.

What's it about?

ADVENTURE WORLD - AN INDIANA JONES GAME adds some adventure and exploration elements into Zynga's traditional simulation game formula. Players take on the role of a young protege of the famous archeologist Indiana Jones, and work their way up through the ranks of the Adventure Society by going on daring adventures in exotic locations. Quests involve hacking bushes, disarming traps, battling snakes and other aggressive creatures, and collecting artifacts to sell for cash that can be used to buy and upgrade tools -- like Indy's famous whip. In between adventures, players build up a base camp by clearing away debris, constructing buildings, and collecting supplies for the next expedition.

Is it any good?

Adventure World offers plenty to do and see for budding explorers, with a higher degree of movement, adventure, and interactivity than past Zynga social sims. The energy meter drains quickly, however, which makes the gameplay feel stilted. The energy meter doubles as a health meter, too, so it will drain extra quickly while the player is getting hit by enemies. All too often, players are left stranded in the middle of a quest, with no choice but to wait for the meter to refill on its own (a very slow process), purchase more energy with real money, or beg Facebook friends for energy packs. This puts a frustrating damper on an otherwise fun and lighthearted adventure sim that captures the spirit of daring archeologist Indiana Jones very well.

Explore, discuss, enjoy

  • Families can talk about online privacy and staying safe while online.  What precautions should you take to protect your personal information on social networks?

  • Families can also talk about how to set Facebook's privacy settings so that strangers can't see personal information and photos, or send private messages.

  • Families can also talk about how the profession of archeology is portrayed in the Indiana Jones movies and in this game. Do you think the portrayal is accurate?
