Cats & Dogs: The Revenge of Kitty Galore (Nintendo DS, Nintendo DSi)

common sense media says

Movie-based game has humor, puzzles, and some combat.

parents & educators say

What parents need to know

Parents need to know that Cats & Dogs: The Revenge of Kitty Galore is a game that is built around the movie of the same name. The game uses scenes from the movie to advance the plot, but this is a puzzle-based platform game with more than 45 missions. The violence is mild, but there are boss battles that require some button mashing. The game targets players 6-years old and up, but older children might become bored while younger children may become frustrated during some of the main, more difficult boss battles.

Educational value: There is some minor puzzle solving required to gather all collectible items within the levels and strategy is needed to figure out the game.
Positive messages: Teamwork is essential in some areas of the game, and the odds are stacked in the favor of the good guys, leading to the notion that bad behavior never wins the day. The characters are polite to one another, and even the limited interaction with the minor, bad characters is handled with politeness. Some threats are made to coerce information by the bad characters, but nothing ever is carried out. The sub-text is that characters of different backgrounds (cats and dogs) can not only work together, but can also be friends.
Positive role models: The cause of the main characters, and the team of good guys, is positive and heroic, and they can avoid combat in most of the levels by taking smart routes through the settings. The characters also get along nicely, and work together while expressing concern for each other as their friendship grows.
Ease of play: The game is pretty straightforward until about 40% into the game and the first main boss battle with the MacDougall twins. There is little guidance here on how to succeed and the instruction book is limited in giving clues. This is a timed, button-mashing exercise that may frustrate younger players. There are no voice-overs and all of the dialogue pertinent to the game situations are text screens that must be read and then tapped to advance.
Violence & scariness: You will fight cats, birds and rats to advance through the levels and all enemies disappear in a puff of smoke, without any bloodshed. Weapons used include rolled up newspapers for whacking, balls for throwing, and a special "sonic-bark." If the main character is defeated in battle, the game merely restarts the level.
Language: The jokes can be self-deprecating at times, but most of the humor is geared toward younger players and uses some potty humor.
Consumerism: The game is designed to relate to the film release of the same name and the top DS screen uses scenes taken straight from the movie to advance between locations.

What to talk about

Talk to your kids
  • Teamwork is a key element in this game and parents can talk about how different people have different abilities that, when combined, can make the team stronger as a whole. In any situation where teams are involved, from school projects to sports, different people bring different strengths and combining those are the keys to success.
  • Puzzle-solving is minor, but in order to collect all the items within a level, players will have to choose their paths carefully. Parents can talk to children about solutions to working through a level, and how -- in real life -- any problem can be solved with reason and by selecting the best course of action.
  • There is an opportunity, for those who have seen the movie, to discuss how the game and the film relate -- what is the same and what is different between the two?
  • Families can talk about tolerance, stereotypes, and acceptance of others who are different than you. Though it is not a prominent factor, the game relates the suspicion between the different species - cats, dogs and birds - and the main characters find a common ground and are able to work together. They even become friends.

What's the story?

What's the story?
In CATS & DOGS: THE REVENGE OF KITTY GALORE, a dog named Diggs teams up with a cat named Catherine and a pigeon named Seamus to stop a plan by the evil cat mastermind Kitty Galore. Kitty Galore is using stolen technology to create a doomsday device that threatens not only animals but humans and the covert dog and cat agencies team up to thwart the end of the world. This puzzle-based platform game comes with more than 45 missions, though most of the missions revolve around the same concepts -- escort and obstacle courses -- with addtional item collection within each level.

Is it any good?

Is it any good?

The game uses tried-and-true level designs, and while there are different mission types, there is a lot of repetition here. While not a bad game, there may be some frustrating moments and players over the age of 10 may find it slightly silly and boring. For the younger players, though, this is a decent enough adjunct to the movie. It's not an innovative use of the movie license, but the use of the scenes from the film may delight the targeted audience of younger children. Plus the item collection, while not necessary to moving on, is clearly displayed in each level so kids who like to find everything will have a reason to repeat a level if they so wish.
