The Clique: Diss and Make Up (Nintendo DS)

common sense media says

Shallow game explores cutthroat school cliques and shopping.

parents & educators say

What parents need to know

Parents need to know that the Clique portrays school as a place overrun with cliques where students must buy expensive clothes and dish gossip to fit in. This is a world in which kids put down others. Some of the gossip refers to comically mischievious situations, like a girl stepping in poo and then wiping it on the janitor's jumpsuit. Friends who each have a copy of the game can connect wirelessly to activate "BFF Mode," where they can exchange character information with each other and receive phone calls in the game from their "BFF" to share gossip.

Positive messages: The game involving buying lots of clothes to put together outfits that adhere to each clique's style. Clothes are expensive, with individual items that can cost a few hundred dollars. The main character works at the mall to earn money to buy them. Girls will talk to you or not based on how the player is dressed. If dressed in the "wrong" style, expect a variety of snarky put-downs like being asked to post for the "homeless fashion expose." Gossiping – hearing a rumor and repeating it to a different girl – is also a part of the game.
Positive role models: Most fellow students come across as self-absorbed and shallow, obsessed with clothes, boys, and fitting in. The main character succumbs to this behavior for most of the game, but even when she realizes the error of her ways it's done in a cliched and unconvincing manner.
Ease of play: The mini-games all have adjustable difficulty to accomodate players of varying skill levels. Even at maximum difficulty, they're all quite easy.
Violence: Not applicable.
Sex: Not applicable.
Language: If the main character isn't dressed appropriate, she can expect to hear put-downs like, "You look ugly in those horrible clothes."

What to talk about

Talk to your kids
  • What are some of the cliques at your school? Do you think you belong to a clique?

  • Why do you think kids choose to be in a clique?

  • Do you think it's more important to "fit in" or to be yourself?

What's the story?

What's the story?

Loosely based on the novel The Clique by Lisi Harrison, THE CLIQUE: DISS AND MAKE UP is about a young girl's efforts to make friends and fit in at her new school by ingratiating herself with the six different ruling cliques: the Eccentrix, Mathletes, Jocks, Pop Divas, Arteests, and Pretty Committee. To impress each clique, players have to dress their character in certain clothes, perform errands for clique members (such as fetching items), dish juicy gossip, and in some cases perform well in a chosen school subject (the Mathletes, for example are impressed by straight-A's in algebra). As well, players take trips to the mall where they can work one of four job mini-games to earn cash and spend it on tops, pants, skirts, and shoes.

Is it any good?

Is it any good?

The premise of The Clique is about as shallow as they come, furthering the idea that young girls have to dress a certain way to be accepted and risk snarky put-downs if they look "wrong." There isn't a whole lot of gameplay either, aside from the simple mini-games that represent jobs and classes. Once players have figured out what they need to do (buy the right clothes, run a couple of errands, and get invited to the party at the end of the day), the entire game can be completed in a couple of hours. The story – a typical teen angst love triangle with misplaced crushes and rivalries – is predictable, too. Fans of the book or movie might get a kick out of The Clique, but it's not a very satisfying game otherwise.

WHAT???
oMAGOD. There's no like, hyrule, or kokiri, or the awsum ppl like SARIA or MIDNA in this game. IF YOU DON'T KNOW WHAT THAT IS I BEG YOU DO LOOK IT UP. Anyways, by the way this game kind of brings memories of when i used to play ocarina of time (OCARINA OF TIME KICKS THIS GAME'S BUTT SOOO MUCH BETTER GOOOOO) because, you press (A) to roll, or to attack or jump/ Get near a person and press (b) to speak to that person. Press a (z) target and (A) to talk to kokiri. First boss in first dungeon: Massie. Equip your lipstick and throw it at the boss. That will get you a heart container. OOOPS wrong game!!! Still, hugely dissapointed. No annabeth either..

Excellent video game for girls
The Clique: Diss and Make Up is an amazing game that young girls will enjoy playing. There's fun mini-games and girls can learn the value of a dollar thanks to the shopping. The content is tame, and there is no violence. I highly recommend purchasing this for your girl gamer. A+

Eh Ma Game
I didin't like the idea of these girls using other girl to climb the sosial ladder at school .This game shows how vindictive girls are . The Clique books focus on fashion and the clothes that you make in the game are very unfashionable in my opinion. Still Iliked it for the drama and gossip.
