Parents need to know that this is a T-rated first-person shooter with tamer violence as compared to M-rated games in the genre. Players can use an array of weapons such as pistols, machine guns, shotguns, alien rifles, and grenades. When enemies are killed, players will sometimes see either blood or an orange ooze (in the case of aliens) shoot out. However, none of the action looks brutal or gory. The game is playable online, a feature Common Sense Media does not recommend to children under the age of 12.
Players take control of Mr. Ford, a secret secret agent investigating a series of alien attacks on Washington, D.C. What Ford eventually learns is his government employer, The Trust, is behind these attacks, and it's up to him to stop them.
The highlight of The Conduit is the controls. The default scheme works very well, although there are moments where the crosshairs move off screen, forcing you to shake the remote to get them back. The level of flexibility included in customizing these controls is fantastic. Players can map almost any action to whichever button they choose, creating the ideal control layout.
However, the single-player campaign falls flat. The story is pretty thin, and the presentation makes it difficult for players to connect with the characters. The missions are often too simple, such as "destroy X number of items." Each level also lacks explosiveness and intensity. Fortunately, the multiplayer component is pretty strong. Players can participate in free-for-all, team reaper, and team objective matches. Overall, The Conduit is a solid addition for Wii owning teens seeking a slightly more adult experience.
Online interaction: Players can talk with each other online through the Wii Speak accessory which may mean your child will hear some colorful language. However, parental controls on the console can be used to limit these unsensored discussions.
Families can talk about whether the Nintendo Wii needs more experiences for the "hardcore" video game player. Should this console cater more to that audience or do you think it should focus on family-friendly gaming?
Since this is a first-person shooter game, is it too violent for kids? Does it matter that you are shooting aliens versus humans?
