Why We Rated This iffy for Ages 13–15

The good stuff

  • Ease of play:

Players use the Wii remote to point their weapons, ranging from pistols and machine guns to alien rifles, pulling the B trigger to fire. The thumbstick on the nunchuk moves their character, while the Z button locks on targets. Players can also flick the nunchuk to toss grenades. The style of play is similar to Microsoft's Halo franchise, where players must "run and gun" throughout various environments to defeat enemies. Assisiting Ford is the All-Seeing Eye, or A.S.E., a device used to uncover hidden puzzles and enemies as well as help navigate each level. Controls feel comfortable, and early tutorials make learning easy.
  • Educational value:

    Not an issue.
  • Messages:

Players assume control of a government secret agent attempting to save the world from an alien invasion.
  • Role models:

Prometheus, the character guiding you through the game, sacrifices himself to help the player thwart this alien invasion.

What to watch out for

  • Online interaction:

Players can talk with each other online through the Wii Speak accessory which may mean your child will hear some colorful language. However, parental controls on the console can be used to limit these unsensored discussions.
  • Violence:

Players battle aliens and mind-controlled human soldiers using weapons such as handguns, shotguns, grenades, rocket launchers, and more firearms.  Bodies fly into the air after explosions, and blood spurts out after attacks. However, the attacks aren't gory.
  • Sex:

    Not an issue.
  • Language:

The strongest words used by characters are "damn" and "hell."
  • Consumerism:

    Not an issue.
  • Drinking, drugs, & smoking:

    Not an issue.

What Parents Need to Know

This review of The Conduit was written by Jinny Gudmundsen

Parents need to know this is a T-rated first-person shooter with tamer violence as compared to M-rated games in the genre. Players can use an array of weapons such as pistols, machine guns, shotguns, alien rifles, and grenades. When enemies are killed, players will sometimes see either blood or an orange ooze (in the case of aliens) shoot out. However, none of the action looks brutal or gory. The game is playable online, a feature Common Sense Media does not recommend to children under the age of 12.

Families Can Talk About

  • Families can talk about whether the Nintendo Wii needs more experiences for the "hardcore" video game player.  Should this console cater more to that audience or do you think it should focus on family-friendly gaming?

  • Since this is a first-person shooter game, is it too violent for kids? Does it matter that you are shooting aliens versus humans?

More on The Conduit

What’s the Story?

Players take control of Mr. Ford, a secret secret agent investigating a series of alien attacks on Washington, D.C. What Ford eventually learns is his government employer, The Trust, is behind these attacks, and it's up to him to stop them. Close

Is It Any Good?

The highlight of The Conduit is the controls. The default scheme works very well, although there are moments where the crosshairs move off screen, forcing you to shake the remote to get them back. The level of flexibility included in customizing these controls is fantastic. Players can map almost any action to whichever button they choose, creating the ideal control layout.

However, the single-player campaign falls flat. The story is pretty thin, and the presentation makes it difficult for players to connect with the characters. The missions are often too simple, such as "destroy X number of items." Each level also lacks explosiveness and intensity. Fortunately, the multiplayer component is pretty strong. Players can participate in free-for-all, team reaper, and team objective matches. Overall, The Conduit is a solid addition for Wii owning teens seeking a slightly more adult experience.

Good game, but for the middle kid in the family...

This game is good, but not for kids who scare easily...and Promethus is the bad guy, so he doesn't guide you through the game. Promethus mind controls the good guys and makes them attack you. The guy who narrates is the guy who previously was in charge of the soldiers. The one player mode is kinda clunky, but the online mode rocks! beware parents, you can voice chat with players on online multiplayer mode...

It's not innapropiate, just hard too play, best for the experienced gamer.

The game is not tat bad, a little cusing and violence but it's hard to play.. It is better for a more experienced gamer, but just because it's hard to play not cause it's innapropiate.
