What parents need to know

Parents need to know that Disney Alice in Wonderland is based on the Tim Burton's film of the same name. It has inventive puzzles and a great sense of adventure, but these gentle explorations are frequently interrupted by frenetic, inescapable battles. You are in control of 5 characters and can fight with a variety of weapons and magical ablilites to defeat the card soldiers of the Red Queen as well as boss characters of the Bandersnatch and Jabberwocky. The intense combat, accompanied by sound effects of clashing swords and cries of pain may turn off kids who simply like puzzle adventures. Gauge your kids' interest accordingly.

Educational value: With the ability to switch between 5 characters, each with their own magical ability, some logic is needed to figure out when you should play as which character.
Positive messages: While using logic to figure out which magical power can solve a puzzle is very much a part of the gameplay, you can't avoid the message that fighting is the way to defeat your enemies.
Positive role models: Each of the five playable characters is very protective of Alice. Alice appears wimpy at first, always hiding while the other characters fight for her, but eventually she stands up to the Jabberwocky.
Ease of play: Maps help with your naviagating through the game, but at times you will wander endlessly trying to find a way forward. The battling seems exceptionally difficult and will take lots of tries to succeed.
Violence: At frequent intervals, vortexes open and out pour the Red Queen's Card Soldiers, who attack you with spears as they try to grab Alice. Some soldiers are so powerful that you must play as the White Rabbit and stop time so that you can focus your attack at specific places. Defeated the Card Soldiers break apart into a deck of cards. There are also 3 intense "boss battles" in which you must correctly time your attacks and use the right magical abilities to defeat the likes of the scary, toothy Bandersnatch and the fearsome Jabberwocky. As the music swells and quickens, you'll hear cries of pain and sounds of battle. You will also fight off mosquitoes and other pests. You are encouraged to destroy your environment to earn currency.
Sex: Not applicable.
Language: Not applicable.
Consumerism: This is a video game based on Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland movie.
Drinking, drugs, & smoking: Not applicable.

What to talk about

Talk to your kids
  • Families can talk about the role of violence in video games. This is a puzzle adventure game that periodically erupts into a fighting game. Did you like the mixing of different genres?
  • Would this have been a better game is the fighting was optional?

What's the story?

What's the story?
In Disney Alice in Wonderland, based on the Tim Burton movie of the same name, a completely new story  unfolds as the Alice of Lewis Carroll's literary works once again falls down the rabbit hole. Just now, Alice is 10 years older and the Red Queen is a despotic ruler of Underland. In Alice's absence, the White Rabbit, the Dormouse, the March Hare, the Mad Hatter, and the Cheshire Hat have banded together to form the Underland Underground Resistance. They need Alice's help to defeat the cruel queen. Kids can switch between playing as the 5 Underland characters. Each character has its own magical ability including the ability to alter or slow time (White Rabbit); the power of telekinesis ( March Hare), the power to become invisible or make hidden objects visible ( Cheshire Cat), the power to create optical illusions ( Mad Hatter); and the power to fight ( Dormouse). Switching between characters is the key gameplay mechanic, and it serves as the basis for most of the environmental puzzles. The game also has intense times of combat, including boss battles.

Is it any good?

Is it any good?

These psychedelic environments filled with highly saturated colors contain some of the cleverest puzzles found in video games. You will have to slow time to be able to read directional signs; and line up two scenes so that as you look through them you discover a new perspective and, perhaps, an undiscovered pathway. This adventure is exciting as you meet and interact with a series of quirky characters.

But the navigation can occasionally get frustrating. And the inclusion of intense, unpredictable battles can be off-putting for kids who were enjoying a gentle puzzle adventure. Vortexes open in tranquil scenes and out of them pour ferocious Playing Card Soldiers. The scary, toothy Bandersnatch just suddenly appears and tries to eat Alice. You must play through these combat scenes and succeed, a process that may take several attempts. These battle scenes are easier if you play with a friend, and the game supports the ability for another player to drop in and then drop out.

Me and my 10 year cousin played this game and we both thought it was a lot of fun! It was easy sometimes but then other times you really had to think about it, which is a happy medium between too easy and too hard. There were things that I enjoyed and things that my cousin enjoyed. There is something for everyone in this game!
