What parents need to know

Parents need to know that while this massively multiplayer online game is offered for free, many of the items kids might want to use in the game need to be purchased. This title is not rated by the ERSB, but parents need to know that the game does contain violence in terms of fighting and killing monsters. This game will have broad appeal to younger kids because of its 3-D cartoon graphics, but because of the violence, free chat, and complicated gameplay, it is most appropriate for kids ages 12 and up. Cash cards are sold at in many retailers to buy in-game consumables.

  • Large community with many message boards available. Because the game supports open chat, that chat can be unpredictable and can carry inherent dangers.
  • Cartoon violence with graphic balloons for words like "Critical Hit." No blood and no corpses litter the ground, but you do kill monsters (they merely fall over and disappear quickly.) Dueling other online players is also part of the game mechanic.
  • None
  • Open chat but a "curse" word filter is available. This can be unpredictable.
  • Free to play, but microtransactions -- small monetary purchases -- of cosmetic and consumable items (such as potions) are in game. This business model is known as a "velvet rope" because it entices kids to play for free, but then ropes them into making purchases. Game cards to make these purchases are sold at major retailers including Target, Best Buy, and Toys R Us.

What's it about?

FLYFF is short for "Fly for Fun" – and this is something that players can do in this massively multiplayer online game (MMOG). A full 3-D game, FLYFF easily engages kids with its cute anime style cartoon graphics. Players start off as a "vagrant" and have to reach level 15 to choose a job of either Acrobat to Magician. All descriptions can be found on the gpotato website, and reading those descriptions will help a player who is starting out in the game.

Players kill monsters and go on quests. The game offers an additional layer of depth in player duels, raising pets, and character customization. Dueling is consensual and does not kill a character – the loser adopts a submissive stance. However, players can die when fighting monsters and will collapse on the ground, but will re-appear in the closest town to rest and regain their health and magic powers. Pets are obtained from eggs that are dropped randomly by monsters. If you take an egg to a Pet Trainer, he will give you a quest to hatch the egg. The pets that hatch are random and range from Rabbits to Dragons. Once players reach the 20th level, they can fly if they purchase the flying equipment – either a boogie board or a broomstick. Fighting controls change at this time and players will find that it is rather difficult to fly and fight at the same time unless your character is a magic user.

Is it any good?

Because this online game has been around since 2005, the game is mature and has the advantage of always having high level players that can cast various spells of protection on the lower level player to give him or her more strength, health, and etc. – all character stats that will assist the new player in killing creatures and gaining experience. A negative in the game play mechanic is that kids will have to grind through repetitive activities to achieve a desired goal.

What families can talk about

Families can talk about the fantasy of flying and why men have always wanted to fly, including the Greeks and Romans. Because players can raise a pet in-game, families can also talk about the responsibility of raising a pet, even a virtual pet. They can also discuss dueling – as players in the game can challenge another to a duel. Should you accept every challenge you receive? What if you lose? Will you feel bad about it? Why shouldn't you challenge players many levels lower than you? Is it a form of bullying?

Cartoonish
I dont think this game is made for 12-yrs old kids. I've played it since 3 years now, and I can tell that if your 12 you won't be smart enough to be good. Why? Because 1: You need ALOT of patience to level up, it might be hard at first. 2: Its VERY hard to make money in this game, you need to be very smart and do good deals. Or buy items with real money... Parents, don't say yes if your child ask you for money for gpotatoes, they cost insanely ALOT. 50$ = enough cash to buy a normal item...

i cant belive you reviewed it CS. it is the least well-known MMORPG ive heard of. the only bad thing that should make it 12+ (and i actually agree with you for once) is the language. you can easily get past the filter by leaving out letters.

ok
Yeah, it's fine except for the fact that players can take the avatar's clothes off, leaving them in their underwear. There is also a 'couple' system, were you get a boy/girl friend. It also gets some children addicted to leveling up.

FlyFF [Fly for Fun] Overview Review
It is set in, what seems to be, a post god battle era, after the land has had some time to recover. It has a mix of technology, medieval and futuristic. Flyff has polytheism of sorts; however, with the exception of some quests, they seem to be rather uninvolved. Flyff introduces you to some magics and in the second class of the magician you may be a Psy Keeper. They are the darker of the two options using psychic and seemingly demonic skills. There is violence on Flyff’s versions of monsters and animals. Some pvp(player verse player) combat is allowed; however it seems to be server specific, as are your characters. You make contact with your weapons, but there is no blood, just sparks and colors. The language can be filtered very well; however it’s not the best. Also, people can use leet speak to get past them. There is a couples system, and you can strip your character to their underwear. In addition the female’s clothing options are limited in coverage, still covering everything, but some less than others. Be careful with your personal and account information some of the con artists are very good. Not to say don’t trust anyone you meet. In general though if you don’t know them in real life don’t trust them fully, always be leery. If you take the right steps you won’t have a problem. Flyff does focus on the aspect of team work, especially with some quests and bigger monsters. Leveling increases with difficulty the higher you are. Buying items for your character will help you greatly in gaining levels. There are some areas that you need a ticket, which must be bought, to enter. Unchecked this game, as with any (if you like it), came start to be addicting. For how long depends on your interest and self-control. You are required to down load a program to install this game to your computer to play. It takes some time. If your computer and internet are up to it, there is great game-play. In addition the graphics are 3d rendered.
