What parents need to know

Parents need to know that this is a game based on Hannah Montana The Movie. It combines a story adventure with musical rhythm games and features 11 Hannah Montana songs. The theme of consumerism is present as the character of Hannah Montana/Miley Stewart shops a lot for clothes in stores sprinkled throughout this world. Plus, players will spend a lot of time changing Hannah/Miley's clothes. However, some of the gameplay allows for designing new clothes. The rhythm games require players to get up and move while playing.

Educational value: Not applicable.
Positive messages: Miley Stewart spends time helping others, but she also shops a lot and changes her outfits often.

What to talk about

Talk to your kids

Families can talk about why Disney created a game based on a movie. Did you buy this game because you liked the movie or because you like Hannah Montana or her music? What did you think of playing with the animated version of Hannah Montana?

What's the story?

What's the story?

HANNAH MONTANA THE MOVIE is a game that combines a linear adventure with periodic breaks for musical performances and minigames. Based on the movie of the same name, the game provides kids with a way to join Hannah on stage dancing, singing, and playing onscreen guitar, drums, and keyboard. Fans can also dress both Hannah and Miley, design outfits, and customize Hannah's touring bus.

On the Wii, the game makes use of the system's unique motion-sensing controls. To learn all the motions used within the game, it is best to start with the Tutorial. There, you will learn how to use hand gestures, like a lasso movement or clapping above your head. You will also learn to pose like a rock star. At times during the performances, you will jam with the band by strumming with the Wii Remote when you see a guitar fret on the screen or rocking out on the drums by following arrow commands. Playing the keyboard involves twisting the Wii remote so that it spotlights musical notes as they drift down to the keyboard. And "singing" involves flicking the nunchuk and shaking it.

Is it any good?

Is it any good?

This game is good for fans of Hannah Montana. They will get to sing and dance to 11 songs, including 5 from Hannah Montana The Movie. The game skews as young as age 6 because the controls are very easy, and most of the dialogue is spoken aloud. Miley has an onscreen organizer that reminds you of your next task. And when you are controling Miley (or occasionally Hannah), an onscreen arrow always shows you the direction to head. Plus the adventure is peppered with fun minigames, including one where you get to ride a horse and make it jump over fences.

But the adventure isn't deep -- it is really a series of tasks involving fetching things for others. And while the Wii version gets kids moving as they join Hannah Montana on stage to perform, parents might not like the message the game sends to young girls about the need to do so much fashion shopping. This Hannah is a clothes horse.

Don't bother.
Some positive messages about being yourself. Lots of consumerism. Dreadful storyline involving liking a boy and dating so unsuitable for a young age. The whole family finds it strange that this is a popular movie as it does nothing for us. Saccharin, dull and a big mistake that we bought it.
