What parents need to know

Parents need to know that Hunted: The Demon's Forge is a very combat-heavy game and it features plenty of blood and gore in the process. Whether you're slicing enemies with an axe or sword or ducking behind a column to peg them off with arrows or magic, enemies can be reduced to bloody chunks, sometimes with body parts flying.

  • Like many fantasy action games, you play as a hero instead of a villain, but you're killing hundreds or even thousands of enemies throughout the course of the game. This doesn't send a good message, though you are protecting humanity from a certain evil.
  • Both the male and female players you take control seem like good people -- one is an Elven warrior and the other a battle-worn human -- and they do fight against evil to protect innocent lives from an ominous force. The female character, however, is scantily-clad, which is common for these kinds of games.
  • If the Xbox 360 version is any indication (there is also a PlayStation 3 and PC version), this video game is very easy to control. Played from a third-person perspective, players move the analog sticks to control movement and the various buttons for attacks.
  • The game features plenty of violence using weapons -- melee attacks and ranged weapons -- as well as magic attacks. Enemies scream in pain, blood can be seen spray out of some fallen creatures, and some limb-severing and decapitation is shown. In one non-interactive scene, someone's heart is ripped out of their body.
  • There is no nudity in the game, nor are there overt sexual references, but the female characters are often dressed suggestively, showing cleavage, stomach, and thighs.

What's it about?

HUNTED: THE DEMON'S FORGE is a fantasy action game, set in a dangerous and dark Tolkein-esque world. You play as one of two central characters -- E’lara, an Elven warrior who specializes in ranged weapons, or Caddoc, a bald and tattooed swordsman -– and must battle your way through dank dungeons and war-torn towns. The story isn't exactly clear, and is riddled with cliched fantasy elements, but it involves an ancient relic, monstrosities known as the Wargar, and your call to –- yep, you guessed it -- save the world from imminent doom and destruction. When playing solo or in co-op mode, you'll navigate these environments from a third-person perspective and use a variety of weapons and magic to destroy enemies.

Is it any good?

Hunted: The Demon's Forge is certainly not one of the best games in this genre, but it proves to be an entertaining romp for those who enjoy these kinds of fantasy action games –- one that fuses melee-based action with cover-based shooting (think Gears of War) –- as well as co-op based puzzles and exploration. That said, the split-screen mode for two gamers in the same room isn't as fun as the online co-op option, where each player gets the full-screen experience. Despite some graphical glitches, the game looks OK and does have a good soundtrack and decent voice acting. Developed by inXile Entertainment, Hunted: The Demon's Forge is a good but not great fantasy action game that might be best as a weekend rental opposed to a $60 purchase.

What families can talk about

  • Families can talk about whether violence against evil fantasy creatures -- like goblins, dragons, skeletons, and demons -- is any better than against innocent human characters?

  • And does the setting matter: a fantasy world that could be ripped out of a Tolkein novel compared to a contemporary setting? Or is violence, blood, and gore the same -- regardless of the enemy and setting?

RELLY GOOD GAME
This game is a really good game and has awesome graphics. It is a bit violent and in the first two minutes of the game a peasants still beating heart is ripped out in splendid detail.

Whoa.
.____. This game looks amazing. I think I'm going to use this site (which on first glance is full of over-protective, fussy parents) to find the good things that adults think are too "mature" for kids. Lol. Them adults, so funny. This game looks good for any other gaming skills you'd probably need as you got into harder and harder games. The title and graphics seem interesting and well done, too. :]

Hunted The Demon's Forge an awesome game!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This game is a very fun one. I love the fact that you can use magic spells and it is sort of like WOW (World of Warcraft) except for your home gaming system. To me the graphics are best on the Xbox 360. I am stuck on the final level though but I hope to beat it soon. P.S. YA BOY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
