Parents need to know that this game is based on the MTV show of the same name that glorifies being crude and disgusting. Just as the TV show is about stupid daredevil stunts, this game even goes one step further by letting you perform stunts that can get you killed. The game's violence comes from watching these stunts and seeing your character die. You watch as your body breaks apart and bleeds while falling down a hill. You will also see near-naked men prancing around.
JACKASS: THE GAME models itself after the Jackass TV show and feature films by letting the player become one of the characters of the show. In this PSP action game, you choose to be Steve-O, Ryan Dunn, or Johnny Knoxville, each of whom resembles his real-life counterpart. You compete in ridiculous events, some of which cause you to die. For example, you can race a shopping cart against an opponent to see which player can reach the finish line first -- but you're on top of a skyscraper, so if you don't stop the cart fast enough you'll end up over the edge, plunging to your death.
By playing through scenarios such as wearing a jock strap and dancing in a retail store or using an umbrella to prevent getting hit with sprayed animal dung, you unlock additional game features as well as footage from the Jackass TV show. Or you can record, save, and replay your wildest exploits and share them with friends. You can also play against other friends in the same room.
Problem is, not only are these activities dumb, but they're not very challenging, so the novelty wears off fast. That said, fans of the show might enjoy the increasingly insane and asinine stunts.
Families can talk about why people would play this game: Is it to live vicariously through the daring show hosts? Or to try something stupid in a game they wouldn't attempt in real life? Or does this game provide great comic relief?
