Retro graphics & some violence, but still a great adventure.

Why We Rated This on for Ages 10 and Up

The good stuff

  • Educational value:

    Not an issue.
  • Messages:

Link uses masks throughout the game. At times, he uses the masks to trick people into thinking he’s someone else so that he can accomplish a goal.

What to watch out for

  • Violence:

Fantasy violence throughout the game with the main character using swords, bow & arrows, and bombs to complete tasks. Enemies disappear in a wisp of smoke when killed.
  • Sex:

The Great Fairy in the game is dressed in what looks like only Ivy leaves. The blocky graphics make for highly exaggerated breasts for female characters.
  • Language:

    Not an issue.
  • Consumerism:

    Not an issue.
  • Drinking, drugs, & smoking:

    Not an issue.

What Parents Need to Know

This review of The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask was written by Jeff Paramchuk

Parents need to know that this game is a re-release of the 2000 Nintendo 64 title of the same name, and that it will not work on the Wii unless you have either a Gamecube controller or the add-on Classic Controller connected to the Wii. Parents also should know that even though the game is rated E, its themes are very dark due to the impending crash of the moon into the world. Each game day, the moon gets closer and does not let up – the sense of hopelessness and dread permeates the game.

More on The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask

What’s the Story?

THE LEGEND OF ZELDA: MAJORA'S MASK takes place immediately after the events of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, but in a world slightly different than the one Link just saved in the previous game. In the opening moments, Link is jostled off of his horse and it, as well as his ocarina, are stolen by a Skull Kid from the first game who is wearing an evil mask, and therefore very powerful. Link then meets a travelling mask salesman who mentions the mask was stolen from him, and he asks you to help him get the mask back within three days (before he leaves town). Three days is also the time left before the moon crashes into the ground – with an always visible grimace on its face. Close

Is It Any Good?

The dark feeling of an inevitable end makes playing Majora's Mask somewhat depressing. At any time, you can look up to the sky and see the moon getting closer and closer. Thankfully, just as in The Legendo of Zelda: Ocarina of Time you can learn songs which will reverse or slow down time to allow you to accomplish tasks throughout the game.

For players who enjoy the Zelda series, Majora's Mask offers a very interesting twist on the standard game story. For a new generation of gamers who are experiencing this game for the first time, the game is quite enjoyable if one can get past the outdated graphics and sound. Younger gamers may not appreciate and/or worry about the dark undertones of the game, so to them, it may simply present a new adventure game with fun challenges including great puzzles.

    Perfection.

It's perfect, beautiful game music, nothing to confuse Zelda fans as they play the different controls, no control changes. When I was little it scared me so much with its Dark mood and its quiet moments, like when you fail to defeat skull kid and the moon crashes onto the village. Navi pisses me off SO much sometimes lol, but she has very helpfull hints. Perfect, this may not be my official classic but its my 3rd classic. The first two Banjo Kazooie games being the first classic and Ocarina of Time being the second. Love the series and the gameplay. If only I were MUCH better at it. Lol.

    • Good role models
    • Easy to play

If you can get your hands on a N64, you MUST play this game.

For its generation, it's one of the best video games ever made. The quests and missions are incredibly fun, and all sorts of secrets and hidden items will keep you playing for hours. Violence is minimal, with sword-fighting, but very little blood, if any at all. All kids of parents who grew up in this generation should show their kids this amazing game.

    GREAT GAME

I played this when it first came out in 2000 9 years ago.. It is a fun very easy to learn game.. The story starts when you (link) get robbed in the forest by the skull kid.. he eventually takes off with your horse and your ocarina.. You eventually get your ocarina back but without the skull kid using the evil majoras mask to lower the moon into the earth which is planned to arrive in 3 days. so you have to get going and "un"curse the 4 guardians.. so you have to go to the dungeons and get through them eventually getting to the bosses. again its a FUN game and addicting also.. its fun trying to figure the dungeons and collecting every mask.. its REAL easy to get used to and again, VERY FUN i was able to play it when i was 8
