What parents need to know

Parents need to know that this is a humorous depiction of the Star Wars universe. Kids will be blasting their way through this world, but what they blow up are LEGOs. Since this is a parody of the Star Wars movies, parents might want to rent the movies before their kids play the game so that they can better enjoy the humor.

  • The player is always accompanied by a group of characters who help out, so there is always a sense of community. Cooperative play feature permits a friend to drop-in/drop-out at will.
  • Lots of blasting throughout, but all cartoonish and involving LEGOs.

What's it about?

The sequel to LEGO Star Wars, last year's sleeper hit, LEGO STAR WARS II: THE ORIGINAL TRILOGY Star Wars II lets players relive the stories of Episode IV: A New Hope, Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back, and Episode VI: Return of the Jedi, but with a twist: This Star Wars universe is built with LEGO bricks and inhabited by LEGO character look-alikes. The game unfolds in the Mos Eisley Cantina, the infamous galactic bar, from which you can access the three different movie worlds. You blast your way through obstacles and bad guys, use the Force to automatically build whenever you find a pile of LEGOs, and solve a variety of puzzles.

Is it any good?

LEGO Star Wars II continues the tongue-in-cheek humor that so endeared the original game to its fans. Testers were amused by their ability to customize characters in the Free Mode. By interchanging body parts of over 50 playable characters, they were able to create Darth 3PO and Princess Leia Kenobi.

LucasArts has been careful to keep the mechanics of the game easy, so children can play. For example, you are given infinite lives. But the experienced Yodas of gaming will also find a challenge by turning on the special adaptive difficulty feature -- the better you play, the harder the game gets. For Star Wars fan both young and old, don't miss this one -- it's exciting, funny, and makes you think.

What families can talk about

Families can talk about how key scenes from the movies are depicted differently in the game. How do the creators use the LEGO characters to create humor? Is it more fun to play by yourself or with a buddy? What makes this game so much fun?

love it!
This game is just perfect for a kid/teen/adult who likes legos, star wars and puzzles. Shouldn't worry about the violence though, they're all made out of legos so it isn't graphic at all.

Family Favorite
My boys love Star Wars and Legos, and my husband loves video games, so this game is a natural fit for our family. I don't want my kids playing violent video games, but since it's just blasting legos apart, I let them play this game, although it's the only shooting video game I will allow them to play. I really enjoy the creativity of converting the Star Wars story into a video game with Legos. The mini-figures do some funny things! You can play with 1 or 2 players, and the 2nd player can easily drop in or out of the game at any point which makes it nice for the parents or friends to play along. We usually play along since our boys are young and still learning how to play and they often need our help still to finish a board. I enjoy playing it as much (if not more) than they do, so it's a fun activity for everyone.

As good as it gets.
Even better! Everyone can play it! A good game even helps with simple puzzles and problems! With an only problem of a price tag at $45, it is still highly recommended!

Fun for the Entire Family
It's great to find a game that not only holds the attention of everyone in our house (no small feat in my case, or so says my wife) but also encourages teamwork and cooperative play between the players. Another reviewer mentioned bickering and I have to say that I agree, though I think my wife and I are worse than our son. This game served as his introduction to the Star Wars Universe and he's absolutely loving it. We are still a bit concerned about the violence but it's always presented in a humorous manner and my son can see far worse by turning on the tv. I should mention the best part of the game is that players can drop in or out at will... this is great when you're playing with the kids and have to get up and do something (answer the door, check on the dogs, etc). My favorite part of the game is watching my son run around the house trying to use the force on all of us. An absolute blast and amazing game that will keep kids of all ages entertained!

Fun game
Lego star wars is a good game. The violence isn't at all graphic because the characters are made of legos. It actually has some really funny parts. After a while the game gets a little boring though. I think the game is a little too long. I think it is appropriate for ages 8+.
