What Parents Need to Know

This review of Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games was written by Andrew Bub

Parents need to know that other than some comic mischief, you won't find anything questionable or offensive here. While some characters are apt to get a boot to the rear end now and then, "Mama Mia" is as close as you get to cursing.

More on Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games

What’s the Story?

In MARIO AND SONIC AT THE OLYMPIC GAMES, onetime rivals Mario, of the Super Nintendo Entertainment System, and Sonic the Hedgehog of SEGA Genesis have come together in a madcap version of the Olympic games. Gameplay involves competing in a series of Olympic-type games including track and field events, gymnastics, table tennis, and others. But there are also some games you will never see in real life, like maneuvering through hoops in the sky. To compete, you choose your character from the ranks of these popular franchises -- Tails, Shadow, and Dr. Eggman are among Sonic's crew, while Mario's cast includes Peach, Bowser, Wario, and Luigi -- and more characters can be unlocked by completing events. Is It Any Good?

While the premise sounds fun and the characters are beloved old favorites, the game lacks polish. Controls are spotty and simplistic, and the games have little depth. But there are over 20 events to choose from and four different game modes. The ability to play with up to three friends is a positive. Sadly Mario's first meeting with Sonic is pretty lackluster -- especially on the already Mini game-saturated Wii console.

Great game for family occasions or partys but not so much by yourself.

I got it last Christmas from Santa Claus and I must say the whole family got great fun out of it. And we're not a family of children you know. The closest sibling in age to me is 19. Theres a 25 year old, 24 year old, 22 year old, 19 year old, 11 year old and sometimes even Mam and Dad play it!!! But it isn't as much fun by yourself. It's the sort of game which could be put away in the corner and forgotten about until the next family game night or party or whatever. But don't get it for any child under the age of 7 or 8 who get's easily frustrated.

What in the world happened to making good games???

A lot of people have been wanting to come out with more politically correct video games that will not offend anyone. They've done it, but at the cost of entertainment. This game is just plain sad. Sonic and Mario have been known for their awesome adventures fighting enemies Dr. Robotnik and Bowser, respectively. But the game creators decided to throw all that away to create an uninspired joke of a game. This game is contains nothing inappropriate, and promotes all the right things, but it's got to be one of the worst games I've played in my life. If you really want to find a game that's non-offensive but still entertaining, try something else. There's plenty better than this.

A good game, but don't be too quick to buy it for your 5 year old.

The game is good generally. There are many games, so if you are annoyed with one you just play another. The first problem is that archery, one of the games I looked forward to, is an unlockable. Once I unlocked it and started to play, I found that they had added the most sensitive controls in the history of wii for this, which made it hard. Besides, Wii Sports Resort is the best disc ever made for the wii, and its archery is so much better than this. The disc has so many games like that, where the idea is great but the controls are too complicated for younger players to master. There were some great games, like Dream Race and Swimming, but these games gave you an unbelievably hard workout in your arms. Nintendo did manage to get the table tennis right, unlike their last effort on Wii Play, and they made it fun enough to give this game a positive rating.
