What parents need to know

Parents need to know that Marvel Super Hero Squad: The Infinity Gauntlet (3DS) is a tie-in to the animated Super Hero Squad TV series. In the game, you control cuter, cartoony version of classic Marvel superheroes. There's a good deal of fighting, but none of it is remotely realistic. And there's also some very nice puzzle-solving to break up the action. As with all of its game on the 3DS, Nintendo recommends that children under 8 play the game in 2D only, as the 3D effects may harm developing eyes. Parents can turn off the 3D effects by using the device's parental controls.

    There's a positive message here about teamwork and cooperation. Many parts of the game can't be completed unless two heroes work together.
  • Positive role models2
    These cartoonier versions of the Marvel superheroes tend to have a goody-goody streak -- no dark, brooding antiheroes here. There's some teasing among the team members, but nothing too harsh. The heroes do, of course, engage in a lot of fighting.
  • Ease of play2
    Through most of the game, the fighting and puzzle-solving can be handled rather easily. But there are several flying sequences which feel way harder than they should be. 
  • Violence2
    There's a ton of brawling going on -- punching, kicking, and blasting energy bolts. And you'll hear lots of grunting during it all. But it's all very cartoony and unrealistic. Enemies simply disappear when defeated.

What's it about?

MARVEL SUPER HERO SQUAD: THE INFINITY GAUNTLET (3DS) has the same plot as the console version, though much of the gameplay is different. The story incorporates the good guys of the Super Hero Squad (including Iron Man, Spider-Man, Thor, Hulk, Invisible Girl, and more), who are trying to collect the powerful Infinity Gems before the evil Thanos can get his hands on them and use them to control the universe.

Is it any good?

 

While Marvel Super Hero Squad: The Infinity Gauntlet (3DS) can't offer the cooperative play of the console versions, it makes up the difference in added puzzles and clever level design that forces you to switch heroes very frequently. It's also refreshingly fan-friendly in that you get to unlock and play with almost all the characters during the game's very first level. The flying sequences can be frustratingly difficult, but they look pretty cool in 3D. One of the game's best features, though, is its hilarious script and great voice acting. In this version, you also have the ability to play as villain characters, which is always another plus for fans.
