I'm sorry, but "No Kids"? Too far.
CommonSense has been doing a very poor job of estimating the age rating for "M" rated video games. The are only two moments in this game that threw it into question for an "M" rating rather than a "T". One moment is a very brief sex scene in which no sensitive areas are shown, and the other is another brief moment when a man is impaled by a tentacle, although this is nothing near as graphic as, say, Gears of War. Thrust me, this game should have been rated Teen, and CommonSense has been slapping a "No Kids" rating on every single "M" game without truly giving much thought to which age group this is suitable for. Ages 13+.

I am a teacher and a parent of two teenagers and a 10 year old. I asked one of my students in sixth grade what a good video game was that I should get my fourteen year old for his birthday. He recommended Mass Effect, so i got it and my teenagers loved it! After seeing the game being played, i realized that it had little blood and almost no explicit content. I let my 10 year old play it, on the grounds that any innapropriate content would be reported to me. A few swear words came up, but that was all. It really does not deserve an M or a Not for Kids.

Does not deserve m rating!
Mass effect is an amazing game! It doesn't deserve an m rating. The thing to be most worried about would be the violence which is pretty much on the same level as halo. There is almost no language and there isn't any sexual content in the whole game. I would give mass effect T- for violence and language. Also mass effect has an amazing story so you will not be disappointed if you buy this game.

The Reapers are Here
The best game ever. This game's graphics, storyline, and diverse characters will blow your mind. It does, however, have some flaws. Humans are impaled on steel pikes by an alien race called the Geth. During these cutscenes, little blood is shown, and the are not impaling them for fun, but because the impaled humans become an entirely different species that the Geth uses for soldiers. Violence is a recurrent theme in this game, for good reason. Commander Shepard, your character, is a war commander. He is mostly attacked, and retaliates for self-defence. The blood of species that are not human is never red. The main enemy is the Geth, which appear to be more like a robot that a living species. However they have white blood, which is seen frequently, given that they are the main enemy. The Geth leader is of a different species, which is a species called Turians, of which one of your squad-mates is. His name is Saren, and he has purple blood, which is seen a large quantity only once (the final fight, when Saren is impaled with a piece of shattered glass, only to shed his skin, and reveal that he is part robot, and is therefore still alive) This game is based around violence and earns its "M" rating more than some others, but is still relatively mild. A good game, I strongly suggest you try.

One of the best games ever
this is one of my favorite games. it has a great element of decision making and some of the deepest characters I have ever seen. it should be noted that there is a sex scene, but it does not always come up. I have one friend who beat the game and didn't even know it was there. the scene is nothing worse than what's in a PG-13 Movie though so it shouldn't be a big concern. the violence is also fairly low key.

Fantastic Game, but why the no kids?
This is a great game that I would recommend for any 12 year old or even a mature 11 year old. A fantastic story and great writing and choices are a plus also. But when the review itself constantly said that its not that bad, why the no kids? The only iffy parts are the sex scene (which isnt that bad) and when a guy is impaled by a tentacle. I hate how common sense just gives every M video game a no kids rating

Sex scene can be avoided!
You can have your character decline the offer to have sex, thus directing the game away from the scene.

Masterpiece
No Kids? That's a little extreme. C'mon commonsense, put it down to atleast 14 and up. Oh and BTW this game and the second one are masterpieces. The love scenes are really nothing much.

No kids. WTF are you thinking, commonsense?
As an experienced gamer, I've seen a lot of rated M games. Assassin's creed 2 and brotherhood have worse sex scenes than in this game. Now, would I get this as a first time M game? Maybe. A soldier (dead) is impaled on a spear in the first five minutes. However, the main enemies in the game are robots, and as such, no blood. However, sometimes you have to fight creatures, and there is a bit of blood, if you can call it that. I'd get this game for my 10 year old child, if he was mature.

not bad
the story is good i have played it and did not see the sex scene but i do know about personally if it can happen but it is not likly or a forced part i think you have to look at it in a different light and i dont understand why common sense media talked about the same sex option was brought up i dont want m kid seeing sex but that goes either way it should only be judge on how graphic it is but i digress the game in all is not that bad with violence or anything else and should be reduced to a teen rating

appropriate for ages 12+
hello parents, let me start out by saying that this sight isn't always reliable in it's own rating, but hearing what other people say about these games has helped my parents decide which games are appropriate. Mass Effect is a very good game and is a border line game. There is some partial nudity in it. At one point in the game you have to go into a strip club to recruit someone for your team. There is no full nudity at all though. Shepard "The Protagonist" can become either a very nice helpful person or an evil mouthy person. You can either make your character good (paragon) or evil (Renegade). This affects the dialog that Shepard might say. One of my biggest concerns is the ease play. The game requires both patience and a good memory. Keep in mind that anything you do in this game affects things in the next games if you choose to buy them. Throughout the the game 2 of your team members are girls (Ashley & Liara) and at two points in the game you are given the chance to pursue a relationship with the girl you interacted with more. You can either just say no and they'll leave you alone or pursue it. This is again reflected in the 2nd game. The language comparatively to other "M" rated game is mild. There is use of S*** H*** D*** and a single use of B****. So I would recommend this game for kids 12+ it's a very good game but you have be mature and take your time with this game or you'll miss valuable details of the story (which is the main reason to play this game). P.S. This is the 2nd "M" rated game my parents let me play and at that time they were zero-tolerance to "M" games.

Amazing game, it could be T if they took it easy on the sexual stuff.
This is one of my favorite games. The RPG elements combined with FPS makes it really great. Fox News lied though, there is no "full graphic sex that leaves nothing to imagination". In fact, I never even got the opportunity to partake in the sex scene, which doesn't really show anything. However, there is a strip club that you have to go to a couple times, and you have the option to sit down watch a practically naked alien chick dance in front of you. Your character has the option to make moral decisions, which could be either good or bad depending on your kid. The violence is very mild, and you are normally fighting robots or aliens. In short, this is a very good game, but a few elements might be a little too mature for younger kids. Definitely recommended for ages 14+

Amazing game!! Not worth M rating!!!
This game is amazing!! It dosnt deserve the M rating, sure there is a small sex scene but there is nothing shown, it is only suggestive. Also there is a very small amount of blood and language in the game. In short I would suggest this game for anybody 14 or older. Hope this helps in your decision.

Most Defintiely not "17+" Material!
Mass Effect is one of the best and possibly the best game i have ever played. Mass Effect does contain fighting in which you shoot enemies with guns, but nothing gory or bloody. About 80-90% of the enemies you will face are a non-organic race of robots. There are two cutscenes that are a little graphic, one where you see people being impaled on spikes (a small amount of blood is shown) and another where a man is stabbed through the chest from behind by a tentacle (blood is shown spraying out of his chest and he lies face up in a pool of blood where you can see his grievous chest wound). Languague isn't an issue with only a few occurences of s*it, d*mn etc. Overall, the sexual content is not extreme, it does show your character and whoever you chose to romance kissing etc. and lying together on a bed, clearly naked and sex is implied but it shows nothing of their activity other than kissing. The story is superb as is the universe of aliens and planets in which it is set. The Mass Effect universe is far more diverse and involved than Star Wars or Star Trek, thanks to the ingame codex which gives massive amounts of information on the galaxy's races, planets, histories and so on. The multiple choice in the game, all the different things you can say/do and how they affect the game give it heaps of replay value. Anybody who enjoys science fiction, or can appreciate a superbly well-made game, should buy Mass Effect. [Jester's Rating: 10/10] *NOTE* To Australians, Mass Effect is rated MA15+ for Sexual References, Sex Scene, and Drug References.

Absolutely sublime but off for under 12s
Don't get me wrong, I love Mass Effect but there is a reasonable amount of iffy stuff. Swearing includes you greedy son of a b**ch, s**t, a*s. D*mn and h*ll are also used throughout the game. There is a LOT of violence in Mass Effect but not much blood, however in some cutscenes you see humans impaled on spikes and the first mission can freak young children out. The only other bad thing is there is a bit of nudity and sex references, there is one sex scene at the end. The first good thing I want to mention is the graphics - they look absolutely stunning. The game plays easily and is great fun. It is futuristic and impressive and a sublime game. I would recommend this to anyone who likes action, third-person role playing shooter games.

The sexual stuff is all blown WAY out of proportion...
Don't let redshirt2188 scare you away. The character doesn't 'straddle' you and the scene is skippable and very brief, max 30 seconds. Another thing is this game is amazing, you can't replace a space RPG with a space FPS and this game is miles above Oblivion in story telling. The story is far more enjoyable in Mass Effect and the pacing is perfect. You're never confused about where to go and the violence is no worse than your average teen rated shooter. Best comparison on violence i can think of is Uncharted.
