What parents need to know

Parents need to know that this first-person shooter game, the third in a popular series, aims to re-create battles during WWII. You can expect the character you play to shoot enemies in the head or throw grenades into a room full of Nazis, among other violent acts. But as a game that re-creates history, the violence feels less gratuitous.

What's it about?

As a U.S. paratrooper in MEDAL OF HONOR: AIRBORNE, part of Electronic Arts' popular World War II shooter series, you land wherever you like -- be it on the ground within the safety zone, or on a rooftop inside of an Axis stronghold -- and then combat the enemy troops by following one of a few paths to victory. The objectives can be completed in whichever order you choose. The game begins with Operation Husky, where you'll drop into a Sicilian village, and ends with a climactic fight in and around a huge vertical concrete tower in Germany Once you're on the ground, however, the core gameplay will be familiar to previous Medal of Honor players: skulking around with a first-person perspective, swapping guns and grenades, and analyzing the environment with help from an onscreen map that indicates where the allied and enemy troops are.

Is it any good?

You can choose weapons to suit your objectives and unlock upgrades by performing impressive moves, including taking down four or five enemies at a time. This adds an interesting role-playing game-like element to the action. Keep in mind, however, that some weapons have serious recoil, which can make them harder to aim and fire repeatedly. Along with the eight- to 10-hour single-player campaign, Medal of Honor: Airborne offers a handful of multiplayer modes for up to 12 players over the Internet, including Team Deathmatch and Objective Airborne.

Medal of Honor: Airborne is an engrossing military action experience -- especially the second half of the story and team-based online modes -- that proves to be one of the best in the franchise to date.

What families can talk about

Families can talk about war being considered "entertainment." Some believe re-creating war -- even virtually -- is insensitive to those who protected our country. Others, however, believe that since this took place more than 60 years enough time has passed, and it has an educational component as it teaches players what it was like on the front lines. Where do you stand?

Paratroopers get new guns
Medal of Honor: Airborne is a fair game, well worth buying. It presents fictional battles during WWII that nevertheless play off of the main storyline. You take the place of an American paratrooper, who works to eliminate the Nazis. Airborne presents a useful upgrading system, where you can improve several weapons based on the number of kills you receive for each. The controls are familiar, but present some new functions that work like a charm, once you get used to them. I did see some small blood puffs, but took a keen eye to place them. The graphics for this game are fairly good, doing a very good job of using the environment and lighting to generate an atmosphere that, along with the soundtrack, fit Airborne like a glove. As for the gameplay itself, I want to say this--Casual is Casual, Normal is Normal, Veteran is Veteran. I highly suggest getting used to the game before advancing to higher levels. The enemies are also class-based--they certainly get tougher later in the game. This is perfectly exemplified by the deadly Nazi Storm Elite trooper, who wears a bulletproof vest, a gas mask, and walks calmly along while carrying a mini-gun. I will never encounter anything scarier in a game than walking around a corner to find myself face-to-face with this horror. All in all, Airborne is a good game, and is definitely worth buying, and is a perfect substitute for an M.

Shooter with a twist
The interesting thing about this game is that you start with a parachute drop in every mission. This allows you to open the game up a bit and gives you more options of how to get through a certain area. While this is certainly an interesting part of gameplay, the rest is pretty bog standard war shooting, 'Move towards objective, shoot enemies, destroy/capture/etc objective, final big objective, celebrate, level over'. Sadly, it's a very short game with only six missions for about 2 odd hours if your playing through once, maybe a few extra if your going for normal and expert difficulty , and the achievements and medals too. I can't blame EA really, as the airborne divisions in ww2 didn't do much till 1944. On the violence, language etc, the violence is surprisingly weak for a war shooter, hardly any blood, the only appearence with a slight squirt as they die. They cry in pain, but no gore or anything. On the guttermouth front, there is not much to be concerned about. You can hear mostly 'd*mn's and 'h*ll's. Theres also one moment when a soldier, seeing his comrades run over by a tank, calling the germans 'sons of b**ches'. All in all, not much bad stuff. Its an old game, so you may want to get more modern games like Call of Duty. Its quite educational though and a good subsitute for a violent game.

Its eduactional if you can handle some blood and langauge.
Its awesome, hard to get the hang of until about the second or third mission. They have a really good range of weapons also, and alot are historical like Stick Grenades. The missions are also realistic too, they all happened and it should be a bit educational. Its not super innapropriate, they only cuss about four times the whole game, and the blood is just a few splats near dead bodies. So it is violent and everything, but still educational.

Depends on what system
Medal of Honor is fun, but it takes a while to get the hang of. Dont be suprised if you keep dying at every checkpoint, because its a hard game, even on easy difficulty. Another problem is that the ps3 version wont play unless you install a controller to the game, whcih was real annoying. Im glad they made it for Wii, because Wii doesn't have much shooting games. So pretty much, the ps3 version is hard with violence and alot of langauge, and the Wii still has all the violence and langauge but is a tad bit easyer.

"It is good war is so terrible, otherwise we might come to like it." General E. Lee
I Think this is a fairly good game as it gives you places to run around in. The only downside, I played this when i was younger, and one time, a Nazi jumped up from behind his wall and ran at me. He started hitting me with his gun, and I still remember the look in his eyes. It was pure anger and hatred. I hate to say it but, I think that only kids 10 and up could handle it.

I think this game gives a good insight on what the boys in the army had to go through. It gives them a real perspective on what war is like. The thing I love about this game is that you can upgrade guns. Good Graphics
