What parents need to know

Parents need to know that Monkey Tales: The Museum of Anything is an edutainment game that integrates typical 3rd grade math skills into the gameplay. This is the third in a series of edutainment games from Europe that has been redesigned for the US to follow both the Common Core Standards as well as the DoDEA (Department of Defense Education Activity) standards. The game is not meant to instruct but to reinforce lessons learned in school in a fun and challenging manner with logic puzzles and math mini-games. The game does have a slight bit of scariness when things in the museum come to life and when kids misjudge and get zapped by a laser. Their character is fried to ash but immediately reforms at the last save spot.

  • A huge dinosaur has taken over the museum and kids have to dodge traps, solve puzzles, and devise a clever way to defeat it -- all using math.
  • The adults in the game are the storytellers that provide kids with information and encourage kids on their adventure.
  • Game controls are simple, using the arrow keys to move, the space bar and enter keys to progress, and the shift key to run. The control key gives kids the ability to zoom out to get an overhead view of the entire map they are in; and all tutorials are voiced and repeatable.
  • There are traps in game and characters can get hit by enemies and fall into pools of acid. When caught, kids merely pop up again at the start of the level. The only graphical depiction is the laser turning characters into a pile of ash.

What's it about?

In MONKEY TALES: THE MUSEUM OF ANYTHING, a museum has been taken over by Carmen Pranquill, a huge dinosaur skeleton. No one dares enter the building because Prnaquill has turned the museum rooms and floors into giant traps. Kids must navigate through the traps and defeat the monster with logic and math.

Is it any good?

Monkey Tales: The Museum of Anything is an exciting adventure game that integrates math mini-games and logic puzzles into the gameplay. The game rewards kids for solving puzzles in a swift manner. The great thing about this game is that it has an algorithm that gages kids math level as they play the games and adjusts each mini-game for their math skills, so they can progress without being overly stressed by games they cannot win. The games have fun themes like shooting at targets and flying spaceships to gather numbers to solve an equation.

The logic puzzles require kids to block and deflect lasers and push floating blocks into waterways to create safe paths. Kids must also jump on moving platforms to get where they need to go. The game encourages exploration by trial-and-error by providing a way to reset each room you enter for a do-over. Only the math mini-games are timed, and they can all be replayed from the game menu.

What families can talk about

  • Families can talk about the difference between fantasy adventures and real life.

  • Families can also talk about math and games. Does the game make math fun? Is this more fun than doing math homework?
