What parents need to know
Parents need to know that this version of The Princess and the Frog most closely tracks the story of the movie. This is a platform puzzle/adventure game where the player takes on the role of Tiana. It also has cooking and music games. Princess Tiana is a positive role model for kids because she's generous, creative, giving, and someone who is willing to work hard to achieve her dreams.This is a totally different game than the one on the Wii or for the Leapster, although each of these games has the same name. This game connects to D-Gamer, where kids can create an avatar to chat and trade in-game items with others.
What's it about?
The Nintendo DS version of THE PRINCESS AND THE FROG sets forth the story of Disney's new Princess Tiana as she goes from being a girl with a dream to own her own restaurant to becoming a frog after kissing a frog (prince) and then questing to once again become human. Played over 27 chapters, this adventure is basically a platformer game with extra activities that include cooking and playing jazz. As Tiana, you explore both New Orleans and the Louisana's bayou. While in her frog form, Tiana must jump on lily pads, use her sticky tongue to grab and swing from things, and collect ingredients to cook special recipes for friends. Joining you are Prince Naveen, the Cajun firefly Ray, Mama Odie, and many others from the movie.
Is it any good?
This beautifully drawn game is lots of fun for kids to play. It does a good job of telling Tiana's story while providing a lot of different kinds of puzzles for kids to figure out. The platforming puzzles are perfect for the targeted audience of girls ages 7 to 11, because they're varied and interesting, but never too difficult. Plus, Firefly Ray serves as your guide because players can control him to fly over an environmental puzzle to get the big picture of how to move through challenging terrains. The addition of cooking and music activities are also fun and track well with the themes found in the movie.
Online interaction: This game connects to D-Gamer , an online community where kids can design an avatar, and safely chat to other who have the game. During the game, you can earn and unlock themed accessories for your avatar as well as honors.
