What parents need to know

Parents need to know that this Wii game is based on the Disney movie of the same name and that it is a different game from the ones played on the Nintendo DS and the Leapster. The game houses 25 wholesome mini-games. While there is one in which you can throw pastries at others, the rest are about dancing, dress-up, decorating, memory, and targeting. This is the only Princess Tiana game in which you can play with up to four others in multiplayer games.

  • Princess Tiana is busy setting up a new restaurant and her new husband, family, and friends are all there to support and help her. The game sends the message that starting a new business is hard work but worth the effort. The game also sends a message that playing mini-games with friends can be fun.
  • Princess Tiana is a hardworking business woman, who is also fun and supportive of her family and friends.
  • The game houses 25 mini-games but some of them suffer from poor or unresponsive controls -- particularly the dance games. But with so many to explore, you can just ignore the ones you don't like.

What's it about?

THE PRINCESS AND THE FROG game for the Nintendo Wii game is a series of mini-games loosely connected with a story line. The game starts at the end of the The Princess and the Frog movie in Tiana's new restaurant. Tiana needs the players' help in earning improvements for the restaurant before its Grand Opening. Those improvements are earned by playing the mini-games. Kids access the mini-games by exploring different hubs, represented by different characters found inside the restaurant. As each character reminisces, players are introduced to a set of mini-games, which, once played, unlock for unlimited play. By reliving their memories, the characters show the player to the movie's story. There are 25 mini-games which run the gamut from dancing games to memory games to games about timing leaps in the air. There are also cooking games, dress-up games, decorating games, and target games. These mini-games all feature 4 player capabilities; and if there are less playing, the other players are controlled by the game's artificial intelligence.

Is it any good?

Many of the 25 games are quite fun, but not all are winners. For example, the memory games and the ones about leaping in the air to perform tricks are exciting and the controls work well. But the controls for the dancing games are hit-and-miss. With 25 different games (although several are very similar), there is enough selection here that kids will have a good time playing with Princess Tiana and her friends.

Of the three different The Princess and the Frog games (the other two are on the Nintendo DS and the Leapster), this one is the best for families wanting to play together while enjoying the antics of the characters from the Disney movie.

What families can talk about

  • Families can talk about why they wanted to play this game. Is it because you have already seen the movie on which it is based? Is this game a form of marketing?

  • Which do you like best: playing with others or letting the computer control your opponents? Why?

  • Would you like to start your own business? What kind would it be?
